Walter Schumm said:
Why would Australians care about American ways? I would argue that in America those who take risks are generally rewarded for taking those risks. For example, because I took 40 years of risk of being shot at and having to crawl through mud, run miles in combat boots, and do other sundry risky things, I now have been rewarded by society with a pension and a medical care plan. Ideally, it would be cool if everyone got the same benefits as I do and I would not begrudge them such if society could afford it and I was rewarded for my risk-taking in some other appropriate way. Some might claim that they were not attracted to such risks and it's unfair that I am rewarded for taking risks that I obviously was not totally unattracted to. This doesn't mean that I want to make someone else miserable or re-educate young children so they want to join the military. If they take similar risks in other jobs, and get similar benefits, fine with me. However, there is a trend among some circles to want to make all outcomes the same, regardless of the risks taken or the benefits produced for society. That apparent "leveling" is actually, in my view, a generation of inequality rather than the creation of equality.

AK and W&P break the MercatorNet Rule of Shortness.
"The Death of Ivan Ilyich" has been included -- by Tolstoy.
Tale of Two Cities breaks the MercatorNet Rule of One Book Per Author. "A Christmas Carol" is included.

Thanks for everyone who picked up the typo. "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is, of course, by *Flannery* O'Connor. It's obvious that we need more proof-readers at MercatorNet. (Please give generously in our fund-raising drive.)

With this I have learned two lessons. I used to think that the best way to boost the number of comments on an article was to feature something on same-sex marriage. But there's an easier way: strategically place an egregious typo in the text, or better still, in a headline.

By the way, I had thought of including Frank O'Connor's short stories. "The Majesty of the Law", "My Oedipus Complex", "First Confession", "Guests of the Nation" and the like are wonderfully narrated.

Old data? Different age range? Different survey methods? Actually, the percentage of high school teens who have ever had sexual intercourse (vaginal) is now around 27% going by the above report, not 17%.

The report in The Australian newspaper (http://bit.ly/JQr4aU) does not mention publication. Perhaps you could Google around a bit and see what comes up.
