My mistake -- you know how things blend together as you get older.

'Twas item #5 on the Finance Committee agenda last Thursday. The full Council will vote on it next Tuesday.

Actually, the Common Council approved -- at our meeting last week -- a complete redesign of the city's web page so that features such as those you note can be provided.

That is exactly the power we have. Councilwoman Brown wasn't telling them where to put them; she was asking what plans they had for the new computers. That's not unreasonable information to ask for before approving an expenditure, especially in this economy.

Nobody but you said anything about illegal aliens, and nobody but you said anything about people who do not work. There are millions who work full-time jobs -- many working multiple jobs -- and still have no health coverage.

And nobody but you has claimed that people / businesses would be given health insurance for nothing. It is all about access to health coverage, which is something you, as a cancer survivor, won't have if you don't have a job with benefits. But that's okay, 'cause you'll do exactly what the millions of others without insurance do: you'll not get treatment until it gets too serious to ignore, you'll then go to the emergency room, which is the most expensive way to treat anything; and when you can't pay, the doctor and hospital will just recover their costs by charging everybody else more and through government subsidies. So you see, not only are you already paying for this, as evidenced by our paying the second highest percentage of GDP for health care, you're paying for the most expensive and least effective care. But you go ahead and keep telling yourself you're not.

BTW: you were the one that said "I have yet to see a single bill". Now you say you have.

Thanks for clearing that up; all you care about is yourself. You don't care that there are more than 45,000,000 Americans without health care; your needs were taken care of. You don't care about the phenomenal waste in our current system, that some of your treatments might have been unnecessary, or there may have been better treatments available; after all, you didn't see a bill and had no out-of-pocket expenses.

Your "currently excellent health care"??? The World Health Organization stopped ranking countries in 2000 because of the complexity of the question; in that last WHO ranking, the United States was 37th overall, and 24th for life expectancy. We did manage a 2nd in one category though, health care spending as a percent of GDP (just behind the Marshall Islands). So we're great at spending money, but we get substandard outcomes. Nope, can't see any improvement here!!!

Mary and I are both disabled, so we probably see more medical professionals in a month than most see in a year. My insurance has gone from a $200 deductible to $2,000.

BTW: The top-rank country, France, was 10th in expenditures, so it's not what you send, it's what you spend it on.

Why not, indeed. The BoE, BET, and the Common Council's Finance Committee has been exploring ways where duplicated functions could be merged, and IT was one that has been mentioned. With one of the Director positions now vacant, why not look at starting here? Even if we need to hire a "worker bee" with a background in education, that has to be cheaper than the $140s the advertised position is paying.
