Big Hollywood : Top 10 Power Pop Albums of 2011

I'll have to check out "Modern Art." " Girlfriend" and "Altered Beast" were two of my favorite '90s albums (along with The Posies "Frosting On The Beater"), and helped shape my view of what "power pop" was (and is).

Big Hollywood : Big Movie Flashback: 'The Howling' (1981)

Between this and 'American Werewolf in London', the early '80s were a great time for werewolf flicks. Just the trailers for this one scared me as an 11-year-old, and when I finally saw it a few years later (heavily edited for television), it still scared me. Dark humor, fantastic special effects, great pacing, writing and acting - a template for fun horror, as far as I'm concerned. "Hello, bright boy" .... Eddie Quist was a scream.

Big Hollywood : Mark Ruffalo Aligns Avengers with Occupy Movement

Given Downey's actual martial arts background, it would be entertaining, to say the least.

And I so wanted to see this. Thanks, Doofalo, for attempting to ruin what should be a fun, politics-free action movie with your uninformed, unimpressive, and ultimately unsuccessful stab at higher-level thinking.

Big Hollywood : First Look: Poster for Ridley Scott's 'Prometheus'

Count me among those pumped for this release. The original "Alien" scared my 9-year-old self to death (what can I say? - I had a cool aunt), and "Aliens" ranks equally high in my celluloid pantheon. On a side note, does anyone remember the black-and-white Dark Horse comic from the late '80s or early '90s that expanded on the story a bit, including showing how the space jockeys captured the aliens on their home planet? Man, I'm an old geek .....

Big Hollywood : Billy Tucci's 'A Child Is Born': Graphic Novel Treats the Nativity as a Real-Life Superhero Origin S

The importance of this work will probably be ignored by the mainstream press, as it doesn't bash Christianity but instead celebrates the birth of our Savior; thank God for sites like Bighollywood.com, where traditional American values, and real American heroes like Mr. Tucci, are celebrated on a daily basis.

Big Hollywood : Your Horror Movie Tip Sheet - The Sleeper Edition

"The Descent" does need to be on every horror fan's list, If you don't have claustrophobia going into the film, you certainly will afterward. And the very same producer has an earlier film, "Dog Soldiers," which is my favorite werewolf film since "The Howling" and "American Werewolf In London" - also well worth checking out.

Big Hollywood : Album Review: Chickenfoot

The best CD I've purchased this year, no question. I had high hopes for this grouping, but some worries - would Chad's Ian Paice-meets-John Stubblefield bashing work with Anthony's fairly straightforward basswork? Would Joe Satriani use the entire album for a demonstration of 32nd-note arpeggios? And could Sammy still bring it like he did in the Montrose days? The answers to these questions were - yes, no, and oh yeah, baby. These guys meshed together to a degree I never would have expected. The CD has been in constant rotation in my car, home and Ipod for the past week ,and will probably remain that way for some time. Great work, guys, and here's hoping we see more from the 'Foot in the future.

Big Hollywood : 'Global Citizenship': An Unsustainable Social Injustice

As if "Chuck," "Firefly" and his support for wounded veterans weren't enough reasons to love Mr. Baldwin, we now discover that he's also a gifted essayist. Something tells me folks of Baldwin's bent are a rare commodity in Hollywoodland ...

Big Hollywood : The Pop Underground Strikes Back

Ah, do I miss "No Depression." So much good music came out during the heyday of the so-called 'Y'allternative" movement, what with Bloodshot Records and others of that ilk, and "No Depression" really helped me discover lots of new and old stuff, from The Sadies and Alejandro Escovedo to old Gram Parsons. It's too bad, as Mr. Baron points out, that most of today's music mags have devolved into little more than outlets for the Obama PR office.
