Yeah, we get our political guidance from 45 year old songs by rural Canadians. Where is the verse about Black preachers standing on the capitol steps rallying against gay rights?

As if George Wallace was black. The biggest opponents are African-American evangelicals.

And an interesting footnote: Cotton, like Cruz, went to Harvard Law. His undergraduate degree is from Harvard, Cruz from Princeton. The larger question should be "What are they teaching them at Harvard?"

No, we in Arkansas are not exactly blubbering with fear. Lots of us think that Tom Cotton is a cretinous pustule. Thanks for the stereotype though.

Why would anyone tell them that? It doesn't make any sense.

Again, to quote that Arkansas Attorney General -- who personally supports gay marriage -- "I'm going to zealously defend our constitution, but at the same time I think it's important to let people know where I stand on the matter."

"It's become more and more difficult for me to accept the idea of anyone being treated as a second class citizen," McDaniel said.

According to the Arkansas Times: "Plaintiffs in the same-sex marriage case moved this morning to clear up a glitch in Judge Piazza's ruling so that license issuance may resume in Pulaski and perhaps other counties."

I like Arkansas. It has a great liberal tradition and a great deal more diversity than the lily-white places where so many of my fellow liberals dwell.

Yes, African-American evangelicals in the South do have a notorious bias against gays. That's no secret. But they don't take it to the level of Nigeria, Jamaica, or Uganda.

Yeah, Arkansas is the home of Heifer International. And that place he now lives, which you think is so full of "actual intellectual enlightenment and empathy for people with a different skin color," does have a 0.7% African-American population.

Arkansas is a pretty state with a nice small city (Little Rock) and several wonderful smaller cities. There are stunning mountains and rich and beautiful wetlands. Arkansas has a rich liberal tradition (think Clinton and the anti-war Fulbright).

Bigotry toward (white) Southerners and the South is the last acceptable form of bigotry -- and it's just as mean-spirited and stupid as bigotry toward inner cities and African-Americans.
