Cohen conducted fake interviews with US and UK politicians as Ali G and Hollywood laughed. Cohen traveled the US as Borat mocking unsuspecting Americans and Hollywood laughed. Cohen attended US fashion events as Bruno and Hollywood laughed (OK, not as hard). Cohen plans to attend the Academy Awards as his Dictator character and suddenly he's waaaaay out of line. Can't decide who're the bigger jerks - Cohen or the Academy.

How many times has Hollywood depicted waterboarding? It seems like they've waterboarded more actors and stuntmen for entertainment purposes (in movies and cable TV) than terrorists by the US government. Only 3 terrorists have been waterboarded, and none since 2003.

My 8 yr old son, who loves the Transformers, saw the Battleship ad and thought it looked REALLY COOL - that says it all, eh? I read John Carter this past snowbound weekend (free for kindle users) and it's a fun story. I may be tempted to see it if the reviews aren't too bad, and it appears that they haven't messed with the story too much.

I see it more as a loss-leader used to effect the conversation and culture. For instance, how many people believe Palin is an idiot because she claimed she could see Russia from her house? In reality, that was a line from an SNL skit, but it informed a whole lot of peoples' opinions who never watch SNL. It's not about ratings, it's about reach.

It's not necessarily a ratings issue - clips of these shows can be used, just like the SNL Palin skits in 2008, on the news/opinion shows the following day. So Stewart or Colbert do a 2-4 min bit on what a jerk Gingrich is (including horrid photos and a catchy, derisive title), and then the next day Morning Joe runs this clip once every 1/2 hour segment and after they stop laughing, they discusses it as if it is a valid political criticism. And this happens on most of the other MSNBC shows, etc. They help craft the MSM's narrative against Republican candidates, so the MSM rewards them with fawning stories..

"Politico loves Stephen Colbert because Stephen Colbert loves Barack Obama" Not exactly. The love him because he is a parody of conservatives they hate - Limbaugh and O'Reilly*. Colbert would probably kill to have ratings like Limbaugh, an average of 22 million listeners daily. And even though O'Reilly isn't conservative, he's NOT a Lefty and he's a ratings powerhouse for FOX. The other reason they love Colbert is because he is going the extra mile to make a mockery of the Republican primary process.

Actors love Sundance because they get to celebrate their "real" work in Indie films. Actors typically disdain blockbusters because their work in them is not seen as challenging - there's not much of a thrill in playing, say, a cop in a franchise or a parent in a squeaky-clean family movie. But in Indie films they really get to act, the grittier or more morally-challenged the character, the better! Where else will they have the opportunity to play a sympathetic pedophile, a deranged and/or PSTD'ing soldier, a charismatic serial killer, a sad-sack mid-westerner trapped in a boring desk job/marriage/dysfunctional family? Indie films aren't about pleasing the audience so much as they are about actors having the chance to play more interesting characters. And Sundance isn't so much about celebrating these awful Indie films as they are celebrating how awesome these actors are for being in a film about pedophiles, deranged soldiers, etc. Especially if they had to ugly it up to get into character (like Charlize Theon in Monster).

You and I may agree that it is truly edgy for a Baptist church to make films about regular folks and faith, but Hollywood's perception of "edgy" are movies about sexual deviancy, US war crimes, ridiculously dysfunctional families, drug dealers whose lives are spiraling out of control, etc. Just look at how the industry keeps congratulating itself for movies about McCarthyism, as if this is somehow daring in the 21st century.I doubt Redford would champion taxpayers funding films like Courageous.

As my husband said just last night after watching a commercial for the film: too soon for a 9/11 movie (at least one that doesn't include a bunch of US soldiers kicking some terrorist a**). The problem with not dealing with the father's killers - the terrorists or their driving ideology - is that Hollywood has been dodging this topic for 11 years. It's not just that it doesn't fit into this story, apparently, they don't think it's important to include it in any 9/11, Iraq, or Afghanistan war story. Sorry, not giving them the benefit of the doubt any more.
