As for "much bloodshed"---it makes little sense when compared to the overwhelming majority of war waged in this world that is directly related to religious belief. What? Are you arguing that Stalin, Hitler and Pol Pot were secular humanists? Ridiculous. But all these side bars are irrelevant to the truth at the heart of the matter. Either there is a God or there isn't. Religious war is waged between believers in the affirmative over the details of their own faith, (usually Abrahamic),and its private revelations, now institutionalized---wherein the devil lies.
It's as clear as the nose on a human face. Religion has been giving ground for centuries and is poised to act either on malicious world destruction or enlightened capitulation---your loss of adherents is accelerating. And the great squealing protests by religious groups are nothing more than frightened victims, still locked in the mass delusional hysteria of religion, as they watch their offspring leaving the madness in droves! Religion itself is the genuine "elephant in the room" of terrorism and armed conflict that few target head-on.

Of course it can and it has been doing it since The Enlightenment. Secular humanism (regardless of what it's called at any given time) continues to gain ground inch-by-inch...closing the gaps of knowledge with science & rationality one new truth paradigm at a time.

The bottom line is Ricky ought to just keep quiet and learn a bit more about the growing and life-affirming movement of atheists that already thrives globally before he steps forward to assume some unneeded leadership role. After all, I've heard it said that organizing atheists is a lot like trying to herd cats.
101 weeks ago @ Big Government - I owe Mr. Breitbart an apology. I just saw Rep. Weiner's statement and, although I was not surprised, I really didn't believe he had those kind of demons in him (albeit moderate enough as demons go). One thing I have concluded, is that I must be under-sexed because after three daughters and a son as well as 6 grandkids, I have never cheated on my wife...never felt these impulses running through me that the recent avalanche of politicians have. Maybe it's something in the water at the Capitol.
101 weeks ago @ Big Government - Intimate pictures? Bare chested? Where? I'm no big fan of Rep. Weiner, but he's in a frakkin' T-shirt, for chrissake. C'mon, Breitbart, get a real job, you flunkey. The last good thing you did was the de-mythologizing of Bob Dylan. That was a real service. This is chickensh*t.

Keep stealth religion out of science class!

PS:
Don't you see what a slippery slope you're on? If you manage to actually implement your goals, then others may come along with a third view of creation based upon the suras of the Quran. Would you like that? What if the courts mandated that now we must teach Quran Science, including ideas about a disk-shaped earth, in 6 stages, along with 7 separate heavens and angels flying through them and man being ceated from a clot of blood? Imagine all those devout Muslims in Tennessee demanding equal time? Maybe they'd just have to share the time or, worse, teach the controversy! You'd blow a gasket then! Keep stealth religion out of science class!

The problem you have is that their convictions are undoubtedly not identical to Christian fundmentalists who base their entire understanding of creation upon Genesis. Suppose I believe in God yet also in evolution as a manifestation of God's original creative impulse? Imagine further that I don't defer to the Bible as a sacred canon nor do I believe that the Bible is the inerrant direct utterance of God? See? There's your patently sectarian problem in a nutshell. You want everyone who studies biology on your watch to be cookie-cutter Christian soldiers---and that just ain't kosher constitutionally. Stop lying to people by way of implying that it's either evolution and atheism or creation via Genesis and Theism.
