Big Hollywood : Adam Carolla Trashes Occupy Wall Street in Epic Rant

I'm increasingly embarrassed by my generation, the Millenials. What they need is a big ol' catastrophe, like a famine or a war or something, to teach them about real life, sacrifice, and character. Unfortunately (fortunately?), if the Generational Dynamics theory is correct, we are in fact going to get one of those. It's just a question of how and when.

Big Government : #OccupyVancouver: Mayor Vows to Shut Down Protest after Second Overdose in Three Days

Good question, especially considering that Canada has come through the recession in much better shape than the States. I'm guessing that the protesters up here in my country are protesting for much the same reasons as our neighbours to the south -- it's hip, trendy, and they get to feel like they're "making a difference" somehow. Meanwhile, nothing changes, and it's up to us grown-ups to actually fix things.

Big Hollywood : President Clinton Appears in 'Funny or Die' Video

I thought it was funny, especially Clinton's bit at the end. Their politics are dangerously misguided, of course, and should be opposed at all costs, but it's nice to occasionally find something that we can all agree on -- like the fact that stealing Sean Penn's lunch is funny. :)

Big Journalism : MSM Ignores How Oslo Shooter's Own Manifesto Completely Destroys "Christian Conservative" Label

I've read portions of his manifesto. I wouldn't go so far as to call him an "economic Marxist", rather, I would say that he prioritizes cultural issues over economic ones, and so is willing to compromise on libertarian economic principles in certain areas to pursue his goal of cultural purity. Certainly his views would be outside the mainstream of the Tea Party in America, but he would still be closer to the Tea Party than to the Communist Party. I think the closest American comparison would be to the "Birther" movement, or the more conservative conspiracy nuts who are always going on about the Bilderbergers or the Trilateral Commission. He's like a radicalized version of them. They're still on the conservative side of the spectrum, but definitely not "one of us". Whatever his political beliefs, he had clearly lost his grip on reality. His primary sin was believing that the ends justified his vile means, a line of thinking which when carried to its logical conclusion always ends in evil deeds.

Big Hollywood : Numbers Don't Lie, Does Jon Stewart?

Precisely. If the world really were the way Jon Stewart thinks it is, then the only moral and rational way to behave would be something like what Jon Stewart does. If half the country really were stupid boorish racist fascists bent on evil and greed and the destruction of all that is good, then any politically-oriented comedian worth his salt would practically be *obligated* to mock such people at every turn. Of course, the only problem is that the world is *not* the way Jon Stewart thinks it is, and he's too far inside the bubble and too emotionally invested in his worldview to be able to see that.

Big Hollywood : Exclusive Audio: Targeting Kids With 'Captain Planet' Enviro-Propaganda

I was a kid in exactly the targeted age range when Captain Planet was on. Looking back, it's kind of surprising how easily my friends and I picked it out as lame propaganda, and mocked it mercilessly for it. Kids aren't as dumb as leftist TV executives think. At least, not the kids growing up in rural Canada, anyway. ;)

Big Hollywood : Same Roger Ebert Who Sees Coded Racism in 'Food Stamps' Publishes Excuse for Director's Pro-Nazi Ran

From the tone of his comments, that was my general impression, that this was some guy who didn't really understand the meaning and significance of what he was saying. The people seeing "coded racism" in innocuous statements by conservatives don't have that excuse. They're just so deeply prejudiced and bigoted against conservatives that they assume conservatives *must* be racist, and go looking for evidence where none exists. I have much more sympathy for this Von Trier fellow than for the Eberts of this world.

Big Journalism : Finding the Right Balance Among Religion, Free Speech, and Humor

Honestly, I did find that "Jesus Pwn3d U" video mildly offensive, in the same way that I would find a video of someone dressing up like my parents or my friends or myself and doing those things to be vaguely insulting. But at the same time, I don't begrudge anyone the right to make such a video, and in fact I would willingly fight a war to protect their right to do so. The issue at hand is not whether people find jokes at the expense of their religion offensive. It's what they do and how they comport themselves when they *are* offended that counts.

Big Hollywood : Obama Nation: The Check List

As I said in my response to Individualist, the reason I consider Obama naive and foolish is that he truly thinks his socialist plans are good and morally right and will work. This is not a conclusion that he arrived at himself; it's what he was taught by his Marxist professors and friends, and he accepted without argument. It's naive to believe that your professors are always telling the truth, and foolish to accept what they tell you without investigating to be sure it's true. We've seen in the way Obama has handled Afghanistan and Guantanamo that when he is confronted with reality, he really does try to make the right choice (sending reinforcements to Afghanistan, not immediately closing Guantanamo). He's simply been brainwashed into thinking that socialism is the right choice.

Big Hollywood : Obama Nation: The Check List

I consider him naive in the larger sense that he truly believes that socialism is good and will work. He thinks that any little underhanded tricks he does are "for the greater good". I believe he really does have altruistic motives, as opposed to someone like Stalin or Hitler, who did what they did, in large part, out of a desire for power. Your point about Marxists not understanding the nature of capitalism is exactly what I'm talking about. Most liberals believe what they believe out of ignorance and naiveté, and perhaps even self-deception. I wouldn't say it quite reaches the level of insanity, though -- there's nothing wrong with their brains. They simply believe things that ain't so. As C. S. Lewis said, "Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience."

Obama is naive and foolish, not insane. Obama wants to enforce his brand of order -- the fact that his plans will inevitably result in chaos is merely a result of his aforementioned foolishness and naiveté, it's not his goal. The Joker, on the other hand, actively seeks to create disorder and chaos, and is actually effective at it. They're as opposite as hot and cold. I just don't see it. :/

Okay, maybe I'm just too much of a geek, but this whole Obama = The Joker meme really annoys me. The Joker, especially in the Dark Knight, is an anarchist. He just wants to destroy everything, burn down civilization, create chaos and disorder. If anything, Obama is the exact opposite of that -- he wants to control everything, expand government, and create strict totalitarian order under the banner of smiley-faced progressivism. Their political philosophies are about as diametrically opposed as you can get. If you want to compare Obama to a comic book supervillain, Lex Luthor or somebody would make a much better match. It just bothers me, is all.

Big Hollywood : REVIEW: Watch Out For Leftist Sucker Punch in Jim Carrey's Lifeless 'Christmas Carol'

"Dickens was no fan of organized religion either, but as you can see Zemeckis thinks he knows better and took it upon himself to change a general warning about hypocrisy into a very specific slap at organized religion — at “men of the cloth” in general. No qualifiers, no “some” men of the cloth… Nope, the whole lot of them." I'm sorry, but this is a ridiculous accusation. The line is not "Men of the cloth are as strange to me...", but "THESE men of the cloth are as strange to me...". The word "these" functions here as a qualifying adjective referring back to the previous sentence, narrowing the focus of the sentence from "men of the cloth" to "men of the cloth who claim to know me and my brothers and do their deeds of ill will and selfishness in our name." In other words, the subject of the sentence is "hypocritical clergy", not "clergy in general". While I agree with the criticism of the animation (the dead-eyes syndrome drifted into the Uncanny Valley at times), I quite enjoyed this movie and was glad I decided to watch it instead of 2012. I especially enjoyed the scene at the end when Scrooge is all joyful and happy.

As a Canadian, I am deeply ashamed of my country's leaders at this point. Canada's role in Afghanistan made me deeply proud of my country for the first time in a long time. We're not a big country, but we were doing our part to fight to defend our friends and our selves. This disgraceful decision to just give up rather than properly fund our military and give them the means to win is profoundly disappointing. The days of Vimy Ridge and Juno Beach are behind us -- will we ever see them again?
