I'm increasingly embarrassed by my generation, the Millenials. What they need is a big ol' catastrophe, like a famine or a war or something, to teach them about real life, sacrifice, and character.

Unfortunately (fortunately?), if the Generational Dynamics theory is correct, we are in fact going to get one of those. It's just a question of how and when.

Good question, especially considering that Canada has come through the recession in much better shape than the States. I'm guessing that the protesters up here in my country are protesting for much the same reasons as our neighbours to the south -- it's hip, trendy, and they get to feel like they're "making a difference" somehow. Meanwhile, nothing changes, and it's up to us grown-ups to actually fix things.

I thought it was funny, especially Clinton's bit at the end. Their politics are dangerously misguided, of course, and should be opposed at all costs, but it's nice to occasionally find something that we can all agree on -- like the fact that stealing Sean Penn's lunch is funny. :)

I've read portions of his manifesto. I wouldn't go so far as to call him an "economic Marxist", rather, I would say that he prioritizes cultural issues over economic ones, and so is willing to compromise on libertarian economic principles in certain areas to pursue his goal of cultural purity.

Certainly his views would be outside the mainstream of the Tea Party in America, but he would still be closer to the Tea Party than to the Communist Party. I think the closest American comparison would be to the "Birther" movement, or the more conservative conspiracy nuts who are always going on about the Bilderbergers or the Trilateral Commission. He's like a radicalized version of them. They're still on the conservative side of the spectrum, but definitely not "one of us".

Whatever his political beliefs, he had clearly lost his grip on reality. His primary sin was believing that the ends justified his vile means, a line of thinking which when carried to its logical conclusion always ends in evil deeds.

Precisely. If the world really were the way Jon Stewart thinks it is, then the only moral and rational way to behave would be something like what Jon Stewart does. If half the country really were stupid boorish racist fascists bent on evil and greed and the destruction of all that is good, then any politically-oriented comedian worth his salt would practically be *obligated* to mock such people at every turn.

Of course, the only problem is that the world is *not* the way Jon Stewart thinks it is, and he's too far inside the bubble and too emotionally invested in his worldview to be able to see that.

I was a kid in exactly the targeted age range when Captain Planet was on. Looking back, it's kind of surprising how easily my friends and I picked it out as lame propaganda, and mocked it mercilessly for it. Kids aren't as dumb as leftist TV executives think. At least, not the kids growing up in rural Canada, anyway. ;)

From the tone of his comments, that was my general impression, that this was some guy who didn't really understand the meaning and significance of what he was saying.

The people seeing "coded racism" in innocuous statements by conservatives don't have that excuse. They're just so deeply prejudiced and bigoted against conservatives that they assume conservatives *must* be racist, and go looking for evidence where none exists.

I have much more sympathy for this Von Trier fellow than for the Eberts of this world.

As a Canadian, I heartily endorse this statement. It's going in my quote file. :)

This is brilliant. You've clearly elucidated and defined certain aspects of the leftist mindset that I've been grasping for words for years to describe. Thanks!

Honestly, I did find that "Jesus Pwn3d U" video mildly offensive, in the same way that I would find a video of someone dressing up like my parents or my friends or myself and doing those things to be vaguely insulting.

But at the same time, I don't begrudge anyone the right to make such a video, and in fact I would willingly fight a war to protect their right to do so. The issue at hand is not whether people find jokes at the expense of their religion offensive. It's what they do and how they comport themselves when they *are* offended that counts.
