'The editors noted that for years, self-congratulatory members of the Swedish elite have contrasted their country favorably with Denmark, which they smeared as racist for its relatively open immigration debate; the self-delusionary implication was always that Sweden – by virtue of its, well, virtue – was immune to the “conflicts, clashes, criminality, welfare fraud, so-called honor killing, innumerable assaults on women, [and] waves of violence” that plagued the rest of Western Europe. '

At the time of the Rodney King riots in LA, the French also said it could never happen in THEIR country.

"Effects of L.A. Riots Reach Across the Ocean", San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 21, 1992

[begin Quote]
... the consensus of French pundits is that something on the scale of the Los Angeles riots could not happen here, mainly because France is a more humane, less racist place with a much stronger commitment to social welfare programs.

Jean Daniel, editor of the weekly Le Nouvel Observateur magazine, bible of the intellectual left, wrote an essay on the Los Angeles events titled "Is It Possible in France?" ...

But, Daniel concluded that France's biggest advantage in avoiding racial and class tensions is its extensive social programs, which essentially guarantee free education and health care for life as well as generous allowances for the unemployed. "France can take comfort in the major, incontestable fact that its social laws are a thousand times more protective than in New York or Los Angeles," commented Daniel. [end quote]

It's very important to note that this single informal experiment was done with a highly selected group of people who were already known to be high achievers and so it was guaranteed that all had something to contribute. In your average public high school (or group of elected representatives) there'd be a lot more parasites and cheats.

So we have one instance of a select group of intelligent, committed, hardworking, responsible people cooperating in an academic setting. And the Sun rises in the east. And a college professor thinks is somehow significant?

I would not be too surprised if the hosting co. did have it in for you because of your political leanings. On the other hand, there are plenty of non-partisan thieves and dunces.

Good luck on the move.

Mr. Bell, what you've experienced is solidly in the grand tradition of the left.

From Joseph Starobin:

'Not a few have asked themselves: if they were capable of such cruelties to each other when they were a small handful of people bound by sacred ideals, what might they have done if they had been in power?...Words like "whitewash" were deemed chauvinism in reverse. The term "black sheep" was deemed chauvinistic in its essence...Both whites and blacks began to take advantage of the enormous weapon which the charge of "white chauvinism" gave them to settle scores, to climb organizational ladders, to fight for jobs and to express personality conflicts...'

'in the name of defying the witchhunt against them, the American Communists complemented it by engaging in a witchhunt of their own...'

The preceding quotes were from "American Communism in Crisis, 1943-1957," by Starobin, then-foreign editor of the American edition of the Daily Worker.

Even Dalton Trumbo fell afoul of that witchhunt. He was excoriated by his fellow Communists for, among other things, writing a description of a Negro boy as "polished and dressed in his very best" because that implied he was clean only on special occasions. See "Red Star Over Hollywood" by Ronald Radosh.

Prevention!

If you use Firefox, also use the add-ons NoScript and Adblock Plus. On a message board I visit, a lot of people have been complaining recently about fending off malware delivered through ads.

You should be doing almost everything (including web surfing) on a Windows user account, not an adminstrator account. Use a separate administrator account just for installing programs and other system-related stuff. It's a bit inconvenient, but safer.

I'm reminded of Milton Friedman's remarks to Phil Donahue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWsx1X8PV_A

"Well, first of all, tell me is there some society you know that doesn’t run on greed? You think Russia doesn’t run on greed? You think China doesn’t run on greed? What is greed? Of course none of us are greedy; its only the other fellow who’s greedy! The world runs on individuals pursuing their separate interests. The great achievements of civilization have not come from government bureaus."
