The Devil's Avocado : The French New Wave dish is a little bit icky, a little bit rich

Apparently we need to have a movie night, because I've never even attempted to explore this genre. Should I even express that in public?

The Devil's Avocado : Crazy Heart is no Lifetime movie

I feel like we are taking the "Lifetime Movie" characterization in different ways. I don't know about you, but I've spent more than a few Saturdays consumed by a marathon of Lifetime movies. One ends and you promise yourself you are going to do something productive with the rest of your day and then the next movie starts and before you know it, daylight has vanished and you're still in your pajamas. Made-for-TV movies can be good, entertaining experiences. Heck, I'd put "The Thorn Birds" up against any theatrically-released film of the last 15 years. I used the characterization in reference to "Crazy Heart" to give an idea of the film's "smallness." We can blame the journalists or the marketing campaign or the buzz surrounding Jeff Bridges' performance, but I just expected more from the movie. It was slow and small and I didn't feel this chemistry between Jean and Bad that Rob has written eloquently about. I actually found myself more interested in the relationship between Bad and Colin Farrell's character. I kept hoping we could dig into that deeper. This is not to say I didn't enjoy "Crazy Heart." I just wish I connected with it in the same way I did with last year's "The Wrestler." I'd stand in front of a moving bus for that movie. The most I'd do for "Crazy Heart" is refrain from getting dressed on a Saturday afternoon.

I can't wait until you watch Season 3 of "Mad Men" Rob. It's so brilliant. I would call it the best show on television, but "Lost" is still on the air.

interracial kiss on "Star Trek." Seriously? "M*A*S*H" is one of my least favorite shows. Did you not shed at least one tear during the "Howdy Doody" video? And maybe I should have specified with top scripted moments, except for the "You Don't Bring Me Flowers" bit on the Grammys. I just couldn't help myself, that performance is so powerful. Screw Radiohead playing with the USC band, this duet is magic.

Before I comment more fully, I just want to say that all my interviews end in the same fashion as the one between Jean and Blake. Just saying. Obviously I'm not being serious. I think I was turned off immediately by the way Jean handled the interview from the moment she walked in the door of his hotel room. Tthose first moments of interaction between the characters screamed "Lifetime Movie" to me. I've seen high school kids conduct better interviews. It was almost as if they made Jean a journalist for the mere purpose of giving her a reason to meet Blake in his hotel room as opposed to a regular fan meeting him at a gig.

The Devil's Avocado : Do the Cannes-Cannes!!

I can't wait to see "Up." Unfortunately I read Ebert's journal where he basically gives away the entire opening scene, which after reading I wish I didn't know. It seems like one of those things that would have taken my breath away had I not known about it prior.

Antichirst completely freaks me out. I don't know if I can watch it. It just sounds like the biggest mind-fuck. Don't know how I'm going to reconcile this fact with my faithful screening of everything Willem Dafoe does.

Reading "High Fidelity" completely cancels out the movie. Generally I like to see a movie before I read the book because generally the book will always be better, but this I read first. Now, I don't know how much that influenced my opinion, but I thought the movie just fell flat. It didn't inspire me in any way like the book did. Maybe it was the switch from London to Chicago that annoyed me. Maybe it was just John Cusack himself. I don't know.

How can a baseball movie be anything but a summer movie? The sport is played in the summer. Hell, it basically personifies summer - sitting outside, drinking beer, eating a hot dog......... Name me a good winter baseball movie.

Jurassic Park!!!! Ahhh yes! Actually all three were released in the summer. The second will always be special just because we saw it with a whopping 25 people and it was just a damn good time and Jeff Goldblum nailed every line. The first one completely blew my mind. I think I saw it three times in the theater during the summer of '93.

The Devil's Avocado : Hey, Star Trek, where are the congas???

I fell asleep during Terminator. I wanted to post something about it, but what can I say.........I did however wake up just when they started playing the G'N'R tune from the second movie. I mean geesh, didn't want to miss that. And I woke up when CGI Arnold came out. Other than that, it was a blur of Christian Bale screaming and a freaky Helen Bonham Carter without hair. I'm really excited for "Up," "Transformers 2" and "Public Enemies." Something, anything to wipe the taste of "Terminator" from my mouth!

Truly--what is summer without a Kenny Loggins theme song?? "Dazed and Confused" is probably my favorite movie on this list. Maybe it's my penchant for bell bottom jeans or nostalgia for a high school existence that I never had, but I could watch this movie a million times. I'm a sucker for all "Ernest" movies--I really don't know how or why, but a piece of my heart died right along with Jim Varney. BUT--I think "Ernest Goes To Jail" is by far the best of the series!! And "The Sandlot" may annoy me more than any other movie ever made. Maybe it's cause I'm a girl. Maybe it's because my brother made me watch it a million times. I love baseball, but that movie irks me......................hahahahaha. Maybe if it had a Kenny Loggins song to go with it.......

The Devil's Avocado : Lists!! Underachieving films we inexplicably love

Yes to Son-in-Law!!!!! What a great movie. It's a shame Pauly Shore ruined his career with "Bio-Dome" and the like because this flick actually was very entertaining. And does anyone remember Carla Cugino guest-starring on an episode of "Saved By The Bell?" "What About Bob" is a masterpiece. I can't remember though if it did well at the box office or if it is one of those cult movies? Anyone remember. I definitely did not see it at the show, I distinctly remember renting it. "Don't Tell Mom The Babysitters Dead" would have been #12 on this list, if we went to 12. A summer classic. I once worked for a woman named Rose and I delighted in saying, "I'm right on top of that Rose" all the time. Hell, I still say that to various bosses.
