Charles, glad you and I discussed this a bit and your words were spot on here, if not a bit hard to write I'm sure. Let me say that I was and have been a supporter of GLSEN from its very early days for a reason. Like your story and many others, I have noticed that it and groups like the Trevor Project (gay suicide hotline) are very important examples of charities at their finest. They are not government organizations but are certainly providing value to a community that deals with much higher levels of both abuse and suicide. Kevin Jennings is a guy I have known for a while and know him to be sincere in his efforts and a solid leader. Certainly I have not been in agreement with everything he or GLSEN stand for but have been a supporter of the basic goal of educating our schools and teachers as to how best to work with the gay youth.

As we've discussed, it's not just a religious right (or religious left) in this country that are our problems but a bigger, and more dangerous group that actually want to kill us. No matter how much we may find ourselves disapproved of in this country as gays there are other forces in the world that prefer to kill us. I value the uncomfortable efforts to educate those among us to the point where they don't fear us and simply allow us to be equal citizens here. Many of us don't want to infringe on any religious covenants but do want the legal rights to be together as a couple and to speak for one another in case of hospitalization. I dont even find that many of the least gay friendly really deep down argue with that.

So, Kevin Jennings is not the problem here and I think Sean Hannity should rethink making him into a wedge issue. There are plenty of other targets in the Obama circle that are truly scary to our freedoms as Americans and our way of life as a capitalist society.

To Hannity, I say that there are plenty of gay activist out there that have taken the position that being gay lets them become untouchable as militant liberals actually hiding behind gay much as a the Taliban use school kids as shields. Gay rage is not helpful to us as a gay community and neither is vilifying the gay community helpful to us as Republicans or conservatives.

Its guys like you and I that may be Barney Frank to our conservative friends and Newt to our liberal friends that need to have the courage to voice to our own communities the damage each side is doing when we really have other enemies that we should be joined together in protecting against. It's Ok to not agree on everything. Don't take it too far Sean...for what ever reason. Kevin Jennings is not perfect, and not always the best with his judgment but he has helped make some valuable strides for those of us who grew up scared to be ourselves, to be gay.
