Big Hollywood : 'Hell on Wheels' Review: AMC's New Western Could Use Its Own John Wayne

I'm willing to watch any Western, pretty much, being intelligent enough to disregard any current political overtones that may be present, and just enjoy that someone is actually putting a "horse opera" on television again.

May or may not be relevant, but was just reading about "Wheat's Louisiana Tigers", Confederate Shock Troops in Lee's Army of Northern Virginia made up of "lower class" folks from New Orleans, such as Irish, thieves, drunks, former soldiers, buskers, etc. Seems that the businessmen/slave owners would employ the Irish for dangerous jobs, since they didn't want to risk their slaves in such situations...so much for equality. Seems the "good people" of New Orleans didn't care for General Wheat's recruitment tactics much because there weren't enough "socially acceptable" folks. Must have done something right though, as these were among the elite of Confederate Troops that Lee used again and again. Wonder if the Left realizes the LSU "Tigers" come from that heritage - nickname?

Big Peace : 25-Oct-11 World View -- Polygamy In Libya Becomes An Issue In The West

If I'm not mistaken, the issue of Polygamy is already in the courts and will ultimately be decided by the Supreme Court. As part of the Supreme Court decision some years ago on Sodomy Laws, they've opened the door to all sorts of "marriages", with Homosexual Marriage being the first, and Multiple Marriages being the next. They will almost certainly couch it as "multiple marriages", in which it's not strictly a Man/Multiple Women, but Multiple Men/Women type of thing in order to preserve their political correctness. After that practically anything is possible under the guise of political correctness and diversity. Nevertheless, it's on its way.

Big Peace : A Marine, Occupy Wall Street, And NYPD

Unlike the other services, Marines are not allowed to wear their "Utilities", i.e. Camouflage off base. Even if they are traveling from home to their base, they are not even supposed to stop for gas or snacks in this uniform. You will never see a Marine in the Airport traveling in Utilities - they are either in uniform, or civilian clothes. As a 6 year active-duty former Marine, I dismissed this individual out-of-hand. He may have sometime been a Marine, but his physical condition, the fit of his uniform, and his actions say that we has never been a Marine.

Big Journalism : Top 20 Most Useless College Majors: Journalism Is #1

There is no "Profession" called Journalism. There is no licensing, testing and no professional body that can revoke a person's "Journalism License" for malfeasance, etc. From Lawyers and Accountants to Plumbers and Hairdressers, there is a public requirement that they be professionally licensed, and a review body where you can go to complain. Journalism has none of these. The whole "mirage" of "Professional Journalism" only began after WWII and the ascendance of Television Reporters, like Huntly, Brinkley, Cronkite, etc. Before WWII Journalism was like the Wild West - the papers and radio made the news as they desired, reported as they desired and publically back whichever Political Party they wanted. Journalism is bunk.

Big Journalism : What if the Birthers Are Right?

Perhaps the Obama "crowd" is just waving this "shiny thing birth certificate" in everyone's face to distract them from something far more sinister. I'm not sure and don't have an opinion, but it fits the circumstances.__ I'm pretty sure Obama is a "natural born U.S. Citizen". But regardless, he's quintessentially not "American"! His early upbringing out of the United States and his subsequent association with Marxists, Socialists and such have warped his American View.

An actor you might not think of - Ward Bond - of "Wagon Train" on Television, but who also appeared in 26 John Ford Films. Rumor is that he and John Wayne, as young men and best friends, liked to go into bars, drink and start fights - just for fun. By all accounts Ward Bond was a tough guy.

Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: #42 Steve McQueen

In 1962, just after his TV series he made a movie "Hell is for Heroes", with Fess Parker, James Coburn and a host of character actors you would all recognize. It is an iconic role for him as a battle weary WWII soldier who lives for the combat. The scene with he and James Coburn and the flame thrower is excruciating, for those of us who know about flame throwers. Just after that he had another "anti hero" role in "The War Lover". No one else could have played those roles.

Just as a side note - O'Reilly interviewed 94 year-old Ernest Borgnine - it's on his web site, for "The O'Reilly Factor". Borgnine had a lot of interesting stuff to say, and particularly about Rock Hudson and how he was never particularly shy about his sex life. People in the movie business just ignored it. But one thing Ernie said that struck home was "what was different" and he said that back in the day, the Publicists were hired to KEEP THEM OUT of the news, not get them in it! That is a significant difference.

You can argue about his place on the list, but there's no doubt that he should be on it. I'll watch anything with him in it. And he was versatile, playing Westerns, Canadian Mounties, and all sorts of characters. But I'll always remember him as Jake Barnes in "The Sun Also Rises". A great movie.

He made a lot of very good movies. My favorite is the classic western "Rawhide" from 1951. It's almost a Film Noir Western, and a young Jack Elam does a very good turn as the bad guy.

It would be very nice if the studio, or Criterion would restore and release "Fate is the Hunter". It's never been available on DVD before. The movie stayed in my mind from seeing it in the original theater release, and from the recent TCM showing. Ford made many great movies, but one of my favorites is "Cowboy" with, of all people in a Western, Jack Lemmon. The almost forgotten Brian Donlevy had a nice part as well.

Warner Bros Archive Collection are slowly releasing McCrea's movies including one his favorite performances "Stars in My Crown" and other Westerns. Certainly "Ride the High Country" was an achievement by Peckinpah, McCrea and Scott. "I want to enter my house justified" was a great line in that movie, spoken by McCrea's character. Perhaps more Americans should adhere to that goal in life.

Big Peace : Washington Post Bigotry: Marine Corps Commandant Should Resign, Because He Raised Concerns About DA

First off, people need to just ignore Richard Cohen. Yes he has a "voice", but after all, who actually reads the newspaper anymore anyway? It is true that Gates, Mullen and team mislead the public and the rest of Congress on what the military survey actually said - that we stand to lose up to 50% of our professional military because of this ruling. We can't let that happen, but as long as people keep voting in Nancy Pelosi, Barney Frank, Harry Reid, Chuck Schumer and team, then we will get what we get in politics. But, even in my active duty time in the USMC 1961-1967, there were homosexuals serving and the dirty secret is that a lot of people knew it. However, these people adhered to the rules, no public displays of affection while in uniform, everyone wears the same uniform, etc., etc. So there was no problem for the most part and the military members went their own way and did their duty. If we accept the common wisdom about Homosexuality, that a person is "born" with the tendency, then as a society, we have to accept that there is a naturally occurring phenomenon with which we must deal. That this may be a genetic defect that only occurs in a small percentage of people should not matter - they are US Citizens and don't deserve scorn, ridicule or oppression. Yes they should be able to serve their country, and do so without reservation. But they must adhere to all the social rules, and the military culture, traditions and unit loyalty that is in place today. There can be no "special accommodations" to their sexual preferences. As military, they must be responsible for their behavior, and be punished the say way any other soldier would. Just because they are "gay" there will not be an outbreak of homosexual rape, harassment, or other inappropriate conduct, just as there isn't for heterosexuals (heterosexual rape, and harassment are common today so we can't be hypocritical!). That's just not logical. People who are gay will have to serve with a modicum of decorum, respect and adherence to the UCMJ. There is no other alternative, since Politicians, for better or worse, set the rules and the military obeys. Talk of a "revolution" or "coup" is just wrong. Get out there and run for office, or work to get those you think would repeal the decision elected if you want it changed. Change the system.

Big Hollywood : Christmas for Film Buffs: Blu-ray Restorations Breathe New Life into Old Classics

These restoration projects can also greatly enhance Black and White movies. "Stagecoach" was recently released by Criterion, restored and on Blu-ray. You see the movie as you have never seen it before, particularly the final shootout, which was a nighttime scene and employed a magical use of shadows and light to paint that final violent gunfight. I enthusiastically recommend it!

Big Peace : OMG: There Are Gays in the Military

Even back in my time - the 60's there were gay people in the military, although there was physical danger in publicly declaring it. I don't think most young people today care that anyone is gay, or straight, or bi-sexual. However, being able to serve "openly" insinuates an "adjustment" that I don't think anyone has considered. The military is, by need, a very insular society; one in which everyone is held to the same standard of conduct, dress, appearance and I don't think this is what the people who are pushing "openly serving" are thinking. I think they will now demand a different standard for gays - one in which they are "openly" allowed to display their sexual preference in dress and conduct - in many of the outlandish ways we have seen in "gay pride" parades and such. If that's what they are thinking, then that's very wrong.

Successful and non-successful Nation-States formed the European Union, which promptly became first bureaucratic and dishonest and has now begun to fall into bankruptcy.
