'The changing language' is an apt phrase. There've been a lot of battles won against racism, but some of the key proponents of organized racial prejudice have just learned to be better at hiding. The majority of people can recognize a bigot at a K.K.K. meeting, but they don't always perceive him in a church body or some other organization, when instead of the message being 'why are they less' it's delivered as 'how are we more.'
