And to miss this: that of course the man knew it was valuable - it was a family heirloom given by his distant relative, Norman Rockwell, to another relative, and passed down through the generations for 90+ years. It has been enjoyed by the extended family for decades. While the top-dollar appraisal certainly surprised that man, who hadn't done a formal appraisal in many years, the media attention (and shocking comments like yours) were even more surprising... and troubling.

Sure, that man and his family wanted to participate in Antiques Roadshow, but not for "getting attention on TV." It was for the experience. For the memories, which we'll now add to the family history of the piece.
