Big Hollywood : How 'Act of Valor' Broke Through to the Mainstream

This movie was fantastic. I will be first in line to buy the Blu-ray. I only hope that this movie tops $100,000,000 at the box office. Hopefully word of mouth combined with the TV ads and forums such as this will keep this flick alive at the box office for a while. Cracking that $100 million mark might actually get some attention from the powers that be in Hollywood.

Big Hollywood : 'Broadcast News' Predicted Journalism's Collapse

I loved this movie when I first saw it, and it is still a favorite of mine. I was 32 when this came out, active duty USAF, married and a father of three. I was well into the "change of life"...leaving the liberalism of my youth and embracing conservatism, seeing Reagan as a great leader and undeserving of the media scorn heaped upon him. This movie spelled out EXACTLY what was wrong with "journalism". A pretty face, the ability to read well on camera...that was all that was needed to be an anchor. If you don't have a good story, make one. If you don't have ANY story, make one. I think Dan Rather, even back then, was the most egregious, trying so hard to meet or exceed Cronkite's audience acceptance. Sad to say, they're even worse today. I watch NO television news. I get all of my news on-line, and I am very particular about where on-line I get it. Our local liberal "newspaper" is laying off workers and shrinking in size due to plumetting sales. Good Riddance.

Big Hollywood : Crystal Eager to Pound GOP 'Idiots' on Oscar Night

Hmmm...seems to me Obama made this little speech AFTER Bin Laden was killed. How...convenient. It's pretty easy to back track and make yourself look good. Bush's "failed policies"...like Guantanamo...were CONTINUED by Obama. Mr. "Make no mistake about it...I'm going to close Guantanamo" sure as hell changed his mind pretty quick! And that is precisely where the intel to GET Bin Laden was initially developed. Try some critical thinking. It's hard, I know. Obama is an unrelenting fool, with more failed policies in 3 years then BOTH Bush's combined 12 years. And the country is in much worse shape, despite the propaganda machine's protestations to the contrary.

Actually, Ding, I spent 20 years in the USAF before starting my second career in Law Enforcement. I never met any SEAL's, but I knew PJ's (pararescue) and FAC's (Forward Air Controllers), both part of the Spec Ops community. Two of my instructors in the Police Academy were US Army Green Beret's...reservists, but stil Spec Ops guys who were activated on occasion. Let's see...how can I put this. The end credits for Act of Valor lists the names of 60 SEAL's who have died since 9/11. Since 9/11...not since Obama was elected. These guys ( and Delta, and the Green Beret's and many other SpecOps guys) have been conducting missions since day one...we just didn't hear about them. Because we aren't SUPPOSED to. Their missions are classified. At least until Obama decided HE needed the publicity. Now these guys can't take a dump with the Prez issuing a press release. And UBL was "got" because intel finally found him. The hunt had been on since 9/11. Obama just fept Bush policies in place.

How can you use the screen name "dingchavez", a character made famous by Tom Clancy, a CIA operative who kills at his government's command, and be a supporter of an empty suit like Obama? A little bit of irony there, huh?

Big Hollywood : Liberal Movie Critics Decry Pro-Military, Pro-American 'Act of Valor'

Okay, I want to make a bet right now, for any amount of money a $38,000 a year Deputy Sheriff can afford, that the same critics who pound THIS movie will trip all over themselves praising the "Let's Kill Bin Laden" film currently in the works which will undoubtedly highlight the "leadership" and "soul searching" of President Obama. Even though that mission was absolutely and without a doubt whatsoever a "kill" mission. Bin Laden was to be shot on sight...that was the SEAL's orders (and deseverdly so...I wouldn't have had it any other way). But in this movie, highlighting the combat capabilities of the Naval Special Warfare Group's highly trained, superbly motivated and unquestionably heroic operatives against ARMED combatants, is "war glorification". Screw'em. Hypocritical, metrosexual pissants, all of them.

What a putz! It's okay for Iran to have nukes because they're a "republic with a lot of factions, just like this country"?
Big Hollywood : 'Tosh.0' Review: Repulsive, Offensive, Politically Incorrect and Undeniably Hilarious

Tosh makes me laugh...and cringe...many times in his allotted half hour . He doesn't just push the envelope, he tears it into itty bitty pieces. I don't know his politics. I suspect he's pretty left. He's young and in show biz, so that's probably a given. But he's got a pretty much 360 degree field of fire. I laughed out loud at the wheelchair clip. Hey, I'm allowed. I'm in a chair due to an auto accident. I'd woulda shot the first guy who tried to lift me up like that!

Big Hollywood : The 2012 Grammy Awards: Minaj's Performance Dishonored Christianity and Houston's Memory

Tony, it's what used to be called "common courtesy". When one is in a gathering in which a prayer is offered, no matter the denomination of the person(s) offering the prayer, or your particular beliefs (or lack of them) you bow your head or remain still and silent out of respect. It hurts you not one whit, it does not make you a hypocrite, it simply shows respect for the belief of others. That respect is the social lubricant that once kept this country running rather smoothly. It is sadly lacking now.

Big Hollywood : Catholic League Denounces Nicki Minaj's 'Vulgar' Grammy Performance

I certainly don't disagree with you on the constant need for the young to "shock" the older generation. The gap just seems to be growing exponentially. I also enjoyed seeing bands like Santana, The Doobie Brothers and Blood, Sweat and Tears in concert. Very few gimmicks here. Hell, Carlos wouldn't even take center stage for most of his show. He kinda laid back off to the right and played his little stoner heart out. The Doobie Brothers and Blood, Sweat and Tears were just some of the tightest, most professional musicians I've ever seen. Nice light shows, but basically just playing their music. Where did that go? You hardly even SEE musicians on stage any more. It seems like it's all canned. A shame, really.

Big Hollywood : Does Jamie Lee Curtis Think Obama Could Have Saved Whitney Houston?

Government involvement in drug abuse treatment has/is already been tried. "Drug Courts" exist in numerous states (even my home "Red State" of Alabama. Defendants with non-violent histories who are charged with drug crimes are tried in a seperate court, whose mandate is court supervised treatment/probation. The problem with this is that no one...and I mean NO one...can beat addiction no matter how effective the treatment unless THEY WANT TO STOP. Beating addiction involves being totally self motivated to that end. No program, government or privately structured or funded, will be successful unless the candidates for said treatment truly want it to succeed.

I've had more than one person I've arrested thank me for saving their lives. I'm not a narc. They were charged with everything from burglary to murder. Their period of incarceration was what ammounted to their "hitting their bottom". Some of them stayed clean after their release and really changed their lives...most didn't. Addiction is an extraordinarily powerfull adversary, no matter the drug in question. The only common denominator I've seen is the consistent and overwhelming urge to self destruct. And everyone around these people see it coming. Their deaths are never a suprise.

It's becoming more and more apparent that todays "musical artists" rely more and more on shock value and less on true musical ability. This appalling trend seemed to begin with Madonna and has spread to every flash in the pan "star" in the business today. Hey, I'm not against combining theater and music. I thorughly enjoyed Pink Floyd, Kiss and Alice Cooper when I was young. All of them integrated theatrics into their live performances. There was some shock value, especially with Alice, but it involved mock hangings and songs like "Dead Babies". Altar boys praying to a woman's crotch wasn't in the picture. And it damn sure wouldn't have made it's way into a live television broadcast. I hope her candle, and Lady GaGa's and too many others to mention, burns out soon. But I wonder what the hell comes next?

Jeez. A beach where you can't play Frisbee or drink a beer? So the local lawmakers actually took the time to construct and pass legislation to ban these horrible activities, and will spend money enforcing them? Okay, it's official. The lawmakers in California, and the people who keep electing them, are a half a bubble off of plumb. I like Adam, and have ever since that sex show he and Dr. Drew had on MTV. I watched "The Man Show" whenever the wife was away (hey, that's how you stay married for 35 years...don't rub their nose in it).
One of the best documentary's I've seen in years in "Standing in the Shadow of Motown -The Funk Brothers". The story of this amazing group of musicians, who provided the instrumental tracks on ALL of the Motown hits, is just wonderful. Their story, interspersed with a reunion of all of these great old men playing their greatest hits with some new and one or two veteran singers, makes for a great evenings entertainment.

Big Hollywood : Trailer Talk: New 'Amazing Spider-Man' Spot Serves Up the Action ... Too Much of the Plot?

Hank, I started reading Spidey comics in the 60's and stopped in the early 70's. Spidey's parents were never mentioned much, except that they were killed in a plane crash or some such. I understand the storyline has been updated somewhat...they were some kind of intelligence agents. Who knows what the movie will bring. Please, some more current readers of the comics chime in here.
