Atheist Revolution : Do Your Co-Workers Know You Are an Atheist?

I have been working in the Office of Courts Administration (Puerto Rico) since 1994, and I become atheist in 2007. Since I used to be an outspoken Catholic, being an outspoken atheist was like "being myself". Luckily, I keep the respect of all of my same-office co-workers and my supervisor. The reason is, I think, that my close co-workers are well-educated people and my boss is a "don't-preach-to-me" Catholic. He actually rejected a job candidate because his resume said "Master in Divinity". In my case, being atheist makes me a good candidate for jokes (about burning in hell) but never bigotry. My second job is as a member of the Air National Guard. The US military don't care about separation of church and state, and sometimes I have had to be firmly outspoken about it. Nonetheless, among my fellow mid-ranks enlisted, the treatment is the same than in my civilian job.

Not all gun owners are irresponsible, crazed maniacs, but there are thousands of "Yosemite Sams" hanging around with their "guns defend us against government" stupidity. When I see guns ad on TV (only in the US), I think that it is 1,000 times worst than "Sodom and Gomorrah".

Atheist Revolution : Atheists in the Heartland

I had previously noticed that atheists "converted" from being formerly very religious, were usually very outspoken. I think this is a phenomena of similar nature.

In hispanic countries, we use the word "estadounidense" (hardly translatable to "Unitedstatesian") to refer to nationals of the US, and "americano" to refer to any of us. Even in politics, exists the American States Organization, and the US is one member. http://www.oas.org/

Congratulations on this post. I have thought a lot about this matter. America is the land of about 30 countries and nationalities. I am American in THAT sense, and you guys also are. Using "America" as the name of one country is wrong, but is also confusing and sad. America is the home of all "anglo-americans" and "latin-americans". We together share a rich culture and heritage, proudly spoken in four different languages. Mexico is Mexico. Don't make the official name of the State a matter of confusion.

Atheist Revolution : Bless You

Here in Puerto Rico, the vast majority of people is either Catholic or Protestant but very conservative in both groups. I just can't become a solitary fighter, in every opportunity, to make visible my opposition to the majority. Using a very known sentence of a series of movies is not only funny, but also unexpected. They expect to hear "Bless you, too", or "Thank you". My advice is to use a funny, unexpected statement (mine or yours) and smile to yourself in the process.

Atheist Revolution : Bless You

Where I live, some people demonstrates their gratitude using the same phrase. I was helping a lady to find the right office in the multi-story building I work. Before getting off the elevator she smiled to me and said (in Spanish) "God bless you". Since then, I answer "May the Force be with you", also with a smile. They just think that everybody around is Christian, so the statement is quite appropriate.

Atheist Revolution : Do You Support Religious Businesses?

During a couple of years I have had a conflict with myself because I bring my cars to a local repair shop, owned by a Christian businessman. Every time they work on my cars, they have been honest, oriented to service, and fees are more than fair. I can't help, but thinking of him like a delusional, very nice person. On the other hand, I strongly agree with the idea of spending my money wisely, I mean supporting business in line with my causes.

Atheist Revolution : Improving the Accuracy of Identifying Atheists in Survey Research

What I have found several times when I share my atheism with someone (most of the time, smart people) is a statement like "I am Catholic, but I don't believe all that shit." So, my best explanation is that some people don't want to bother themselves with getting out of the closet. They keep going to church and doing everything just the same than religious people. From my point of view, that is a lack of integrity, but we have to deal with it.

Atheist Revolution : Idiot of the Week: Special 9/11 Anniversary Edition

This post is among your very best. We all notice that, every year, media try to raise a "tears circus" on the "unprecedented" tragedy. Everybody seem to forget the two cities erased in Japan by an American attack in 1945, or the cruel dictatorship that began on September 11, 1973, in Chile, with the help of CIA. My recent post Strong Bonds: Entre la Ayuda y la Indoctrinación

Atheist Revolution : Should I Post the Identities of Those Who Send Hate Mail?

I vote YES. Post their name, email, physical address, SSN, everything! They know their message is hateful and violent. Many of them would be ashamed of being read by a next of kin. Fellow churchgoers should know too. I would like to see their hate mail exponentially forwarded on Facebook.

Atheist Revolution : We are a Bunch of Jackasses

I wonder how much critical analysis is required to call anti-american every people who present an opinion he dislike. But what, exactly, mean to be an american? To believe that the events of 9-11 were not previously expected by the government? To believe that Iraq had mass destruction weapons and that Saddam was related to Al Qaeda? To believe that after ten years of war, over one million people dead, and $15 billion spent, we have something to celebrate? Please, tell me that being an american is something else that being a troll with stars and stripes on the t-shirt.

Atheist Revolution : Religious States the Fattest

It isn't necessary to see unhealthy lifestyles and religiosity as cause and effect. They are both effect of a sadly poor education. People who don't know how to properly think and check the validity of their own ideas, hardly can take a personal responsibility for their mental and physical health. Now we found a cause-effect relationship: education and health.

Atheist Revolution : Should Atheists Celebrate Christmas?

I think I know what you mean about Catholics. I remember my wife getting upset with me because she wanted to pray a rosary for her dead grandfather. She didn't know how to do it, so she asked me (the atheist member of the family) to lead the rosary prayer. Without pork, beer and music, that was far beyond the line.

Atheist Revolution : Should Atheists Celebrate Christmas?

When I was a Catholic, I used to get upset by non-religious, Christmas decorations and motifs. "A snowman is not Christmas at all". Now, being an atheist, I appreciate all those secular, non-sensed, nothing-related-to-religion, traditions. Being hispanic, Christmas are six weeks of food and drinks, music, parties all night long, and doing almost nothing in the office. I can't escape from so much happiness. Sometimes I catch myself singing religious songs. No big deal about it. It is like to sing songs to god Dionysus (Bacchus) in exchange for wine. So singing about Jesus' birth, real or mythological, is good exchange for pork meat and beer. No moral trouble.

Atheist Revolution : Personal Displays of Religious Symbols: A Double-Standard

We could ask for the support of the Secular Coalition for America and the Freedom from Religion Foundation among other groups to develop this idea. I mean: -select the appropriate slogan, the one we like or other. -design and acquiring the display media (pin, label, whatever) -marketing and distributing (keeping a low price but allowing for a small benefit for the organizations) -we all display the item the National Day of Prayer, May 6, 2010.
