I wish someone had made me bacon while I was finishing up the taxes. :) But at least they're done.

I don't know if you've seen Pastor Petersen's answer to your further question on FB, but while I was working on replying to you here, I saw it.

He is using "catechizing" in a broader sense than you are, I believe, that of "religious teaching" in general. And I do think--in that broader sense--that is the only way that changes can be made peacefully in a congregation. Different congregations are also at different places. Because Redeemer is a congregation where bowing, genuflection, crossing, etc., are commonplace--although certainly not required--the prostration during the reproaches in one segment of a three hour Good Friday service isn't a big thing. At many of the churches we've belonged to, though, it would be akin to martians showing up in the chancel. :) In those churches it would be a long, long journey to that point and perhaps not even something that would be salutary.

I can attest from seven years at Redeemer and the teaching our family has received there that Pastor is very clear about what is necessary doctrine and what is not. :) An example: My husband is Vice-Chair of the congregation and a member of the choir and attends services almost daily, but he does not genuflect or cross himself. It isn't comfortable for him and it isn't an issue. He does, however, love the level of ceremony that we have in our services.

You'll have to come visit us sometime in your travels. :)
