Big Hollywood : Today's Open Thread: #3 'Breaking Bad'

The theme and genius of "Breaking Bad" is the same as for Marlowe's "Dr. Faustus." The steady and unstoppable descent into hell that Bryan Cranston's character follows is as heart wrenching as it is predictable. The worst part, as in real life, is not the price Walt himself pays for his arrogance and greed but the price paid by almost everyone around him, especially his family. While the first season does a great job setting up the string of motivating factors that lead to Walt signing the metaphorical blood contract with Mephistophilis, it is always emphasized that the choices are his and his alone until he eventually finds himself in too deep to turn back. There is probably no better argument in popular culture right now against the horrors of the "easy" money and "cheap high" of methamphetamine (or any hard drugs). Don't be turned off by the idea that this is a lefty tale of a good man turned bad by society's failures. The writing is incredibly effective at displaying how seductive bad choices can look at the time they are made, and how the cost that one must inevitably pay makes even worse choices start to look attractive until your life is no longer your own. While this series is undeniably brilliant, I have to strongly agree with other commenters that it most certainly isn't for everyone. Its overwhelming darkness is no doubt too much for many people, and the lack of likeable characters can be a turnoff for those who need to relate to at least one main character. I've had to leave it on my DVR for weeks if I'm feeling depressed or down.

Big Government : Planned Parenthood, Child-Trafficking, and the Poor Choices of NPR and Company

The left sees only three kinds of victims, and which category they fit into is defined by the identity of the perpetrators of the crimes. There are the victims who are to be exploited to advance the cause of dehumanizing the individual in relation to the state, which is the long term goal of all progressive ideologues. Then there are the victims whose stories cannot be fit into the progressive narrative, or who refuse to let themselves be defined as such. The progressive media will report on these victims briefly for ratings and then forget about them quickly when their stories become old news. Finally there are the victims who are inconvenient, whose only crime was to be victimized by the dehumanizers who work hand in hand with the progressive media to crush the individual. Whether victims of Canadian kangaroo "human rights" tribunals, cops murdered by Black Radicals (think of Mumia), the conservative activists brutally beaten by SEIU thugs, and in this instance young children that Planned Parenthood helps to keep enslaved. They must be lied about, turned into the true villains of the story, ridiculed with Alynsky tactics, and if all that fails completely ignored. It is no coincidence that a left-wing "arrestable" who attempted to physically assault Rand Paul before she was tackled became a hero-victim in the news cycle for weeks until the truth could no longer be suppressed, then the story died. Meanwhile in Tucson at around the same time during a debate between Rep. Giffords (you know, the supposed moderate who was gunned down by Sarah Palin, I mean Jared Loughner) and Jesse Kelly a Giffords supporter violently attacked and strangled a Kelly supporter. This incident didn't even make our local paper, the Arizona Daily Star, which somehow found the Rand Paul incident quite noteworthy.

Breitbart.tv : NRA Helping Pelosi Stay Speaker?

Look through your past replies on your profile, it seems your first comment on here was on a Breitbart.tv video regarding the One Nation Socialist rally was the victim of a left-wing thumbs down assault. Your short comment got -36. Every conservative comment on there got dozens of thumbs down. That put you in the Red from the beginning, meaning people saw you from the beginning as a troll, while others with more established records didn't get into the Red. Just to help I gave you a few thumbs up :)

Big Government : Baseball Star Albert Pujols to Attend Beck Rally

I realize you're a fan of Guild Wars, I know many people who play it (although I've just witnessed them). That said I believe adding an out-of-context advertising link to the game in every post you've made is a little inappropriate. If you're just a fan and have permission to do so then I apologize, but if you don't have permission from the moderators you might want to explain your case to them, or just only add the guild wars links when in context with your reply. Thank you :)

Big Government : Houston Election Headquarters Warehouse Destroyed by Fire, Just Days After Fraud Allegations

No matter how obvious this may look, we have to verify that this was truly arson related to the voter fraud. Jumping to conclusions now might make us look silly. Okay, disclaimer over... Assuming that this is exactly what it appears to be I am not in the least bit surprised. These animals know all about how to burn down buildings without getting caught. Most of them have access to the Environmental Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front. ELFers and ALFers and their organized crime buddies in the unions are masters at these tactics. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if the investigation leads nowhere. They know how to cover their tracks and are extremely well funded with our tax dollars, corporate shakedowns and puppet-master billionaires like Soros and John Lewis. If they really did do this they will have invested all their resources into not getting caught. And don't expect the cowardly officials to dig too deep. They know how dangerous these people are, while others are actively allied with them such as ObaMao's gangsters at the Justice Department (remember the Black Panther case).

Big Journalism : Cause and Effect? Couric Lectures Fellow Americans, CBS News' Ratings Hit Bottom

That clip gave me the chills. There wasn't much left for Couric to say that could shock me but this definitely did. The dripping condescension toward her viewers and complete, unmitigated snobbery in this monologue is frightening. I feel like I need to take a long hot shower just to cleanse myself of her venom.

Big Government : Gun Owners of America Exits Pro-net Neutrality coalition

Looks like an honest mistake, but it puts the GOA leadership's judgment in doubt. I could tell what the Net Neutrality people were really after a few years ago. And this was just from listening to their point of view when no real organized opposition had developed. Too many creepy big government code phrases and lefty talking points with outlandish "what if?" scenarios to make anyone to the right of Pelosi nervous. Hell, the rhetoric was practically all in Pelosi-speak, that distorted jumble of english words and slogans that spews regularly from the Madam Speaker's botox paralyzed lips. For the GOA to ally with their natural enemies on the basis of such rhetoric is a substantial embarrassment. Lets hope this is the last time they make such a monumental mistake.

You've laid out an excellent case BIGsites, and I hope that the GOPers take note. That said I hope you are not truly serious about a wave of 2012 3rd party runs are you? This country is a few more terrible decisions and about three years away from a point of no return. If the three stooges Barry Harry and Scary are allowed to win in 2012 (or 2010 for that matter) on the basis of conservatives siphoning off votes with a third party and handing the Marxists huge majorities based on plurality wins then this country is doomed no matter how much stronger the conservative movement becomes. I'm not usually against the strategy you laid out to force the GOP to get its act together by running well funded 3rd party candidates against RINOs. The outcome in upstate NY against Dede whats-her-name probably saved the GOP far more than the short term cost of one seat. Unless control of the House or Senate is up for grabs (don't discount the value of committee chairmen to set the agenda and subpoena White House goons in a way the MSM can't ignore) its always better for Congress's many Neo-Marxists to have a (D) next to their name than an (R). Paul Ryan, Tom Coburn and Jim DeMint are all GOP. They and those like them are all that stands between further prosperity for the United States and Obama's 30 year plan for national suicide. Even if true conservatives in office have to be backed up by RINOs they will have the increased influence to do a lot of good. If the Democrats win in 2012 there will be no way to just wait for the next election when we might have better candidates. Fiscal conservative Republicans can win landslides in every election from 2014 on and we'll probably still see the end of our country by 2050. It may already be too late but we must concentrate on primaries and not delude ourselves with a broad based third party assault until the current fiscal/security crisis is contained. Then we'll have more strategic space to concentrate on preventing another disaster of this magnitude.

Perfect outline for how to respond to these freaks. I wish more conservatives were out there with responses like this rather than running for cover whenever the big R word (Racist!!) is hurled at them. Breitbart always puts his critics to shame by turning their hateful epithets against them. If we had more fighters like him we could reach more average Americans and take back this country.

I completely agree. I consider myself an intellectual even though I hate the vast majority of intellectuals out there. But as Socrates said the unexamined life is not worth living so I am honest about my strengths and many weaknesses, a line too often quoted by intellectuals but too rarely practiced (Thomas Sowell has discussed this tendency far better than I could). My grandmother (a very brilliant but practical lady) would tell me I can see that which doesn't affect me with perfect clarity, but am blind to situations that do. Day to day life is a real hassle; your toaster metaphor sounds like something I would use to describe myself. That's why I love movies like The Expendables because for almost two hours in a theater and weeks thereafter in daydreams I can fantasize about being someone who can see the trees as well as the forest.

Big Hollywood : When Muslims Make Fun of the Amish

Thank you. I had not seen that specific clip. What I find particularly disgusting is that most Western stealth jihadis seem unable to recognize the horrors Hamas and Hezbollah inflict on other Muslims is greater than that inflicted on the "infidels" in Israel and Lebanon. Either that or they don't care. The leftists who support these groups in their unholy "Red-Green Alliance" will start sputtering inanities about imperialist aggression, Zionism, George Bush and whatever else. To cite the recent example of Iran importing its Hezbollah thugs to brutalize its own citizens: every moderate Muslim I have spoken to recently will know about this whenever they hear about Hezbollah. Again thanks for the link, it is chilling.

Big Government : BREAKING: Blagojevich Guilty on Only One Count, Hung Jury on 23 Others

From following the case a bit I'm not surprised. Remember, the main prosecutor is Patty Fitzgerald, the guy who somehow got a jury to condemn Scooter Libby of perjury in the Valerie Plame affair, despite the fact that he had no reason to lie. The only liars were Plame and Joe Wilson, and the administration had every right to call them on it. The whole trial was based on how evil Cheney and Rove were, and the Leftist lunatic jury went along with it because Libby was the only one whose testimony to the Grand Jury had some holes in it. Fitzgerald sank this case on his own incompetence and ego, and couldn't use eeeevil Dick Cheney as a bogeyman. A competent prosecutor would have waited for slimeball Blago to appoint the Senate replacement, and could have gotten real proof of corruption. At least he got nailed for perjury, as a crime was most certainly committed and Blago had every reason to lie. Lets hope they retry the other charges with a competent team.

This really makes me wonder who these Mosque guys really are. They seem to have an arrogance about them shared by many of their fellow not-so-moderate coreligionists. A moderate Muslim organization would not be so desperate to build their mosque/Islamist cultural center so close to Ground Zero. They have so far shown no willingness to even give an inch to their critics. At this point they could have done much to satisfy our greatest fears that this is an Islamist Victory Monument against the Great Satan. They have refused to work with 9/11 Victims groups to put up at least a small memorial to the tragedy. They have refused specific denunciations of extremism in favor of the stealth jihadist's usual meaningless rhetorical dodges. As other articles on here have mentioned, they refused to even consider Gov. Patterson's alternative site (even if they eventually turned it down, a serious consideration would have been welcome). Now they have resorted to bigotry against the Amish who have spoken out. It will be interesting to see how long Bloomberg can maintain his enthusiasm.

Big Hollywood : 'LA Times' To Hollywood: Please Ignore the Box Office Success of 'The Expendables'

I took off by myself this last Saturday to watch it. I think almost any true conservative will get a kick out of it if you're into action movies. Hell it seems all but the snobbiest liberals seem to like it as well. For what its worth besides Willis and Sly, Randy Couture has said he is a Republican. Mickey Rourke is probably not conservative, but he did defend Bush in 2009 to a group of Obama-crazed British reporters and has made pro-American statements re the War on Terror. Eric Roberts is a lefty, but i read an article where it seemed that he criticized the Hollyweird blacklist on conservatives. Makes it at least three with Couture and no real obnoxious lefties as far as I know
