I'd like a quick clarification before I start this. I have a 3g on BB 5.14.02 and 4.1 firmware. I want to end up on BB 6.15 with 4.2.1 firmware. Am I understanding correctly that I should choose update normally in iTunes first, then select the 4.2.1 IPSW with redsn0w?

Well, they were faster with redsn0w than my VMWare download so I'm just gonna use that and cancel these downloads for now. On the plus side, I'll finish up those downloads a little later and I'll have it ready if I ever want them again later. :)

Yep, same here with a bit less than an hour left to go. I googled around and I've seen mixed results about success and all of those were very old.

I'm sure I'm not the only one to have thought of this. Has anyone tried using VMWare with an OS X image with success?

If I'm not mistaken, you should be able to run pwnagetool by using VMWare or similar. I haven't actually tried it yet, but I'm downloading the necessary files to give it a try unless they release the new redsn0w before I finish... it's gonna be a few hours to download all these files on my 3 mbps DSL.

There has been an explosion of new informative posts on MuscleNerd's Twitter today. In particular, this comment was exciting: "Finally got ultrasn0w working fully on 4.2.1. Apple inadvertently(!) broke ultrasn0w via aggressive compiler optimization" It sounds like this is probably exactly what we've been waiting for. Sounds like the release by Sunday estimate might be right.

It boggles my mind that so many people don't get this. There are a ton of reasons. First and foremost, it is a testament to the tremendous number of people who are awaiting this release. These people are excited, anxious, and there are bound to be a few that skip over a sentence or two. Expecting anything more than simply skimming over the comments section is just plain silly, and the chances of missing something there or on twitter are high. Secondly, in relation to the first reason, there is a very apparent language barrier. As I've followed this, I've seen a very large number of comments that have varying levels of command of the English language. To expect these people to be able to fully comprehend the text is plain ridiculous. They are most likely putting forth more effort than us native English speakers in an attempt to understand, and they can't even ask questions in their native language without having them deleted, so they turn to rough translations or babel fish. Third, yet again related to the first, there will always be a few people who only skim through the text and then ask a question instead. They could be lazy, or they could be intimidated by the technical jargon. Remember that many people might not even know what jail breaking even means. As a programmer who has installed at least 3 custom firmwares in the past and worked on a development team for a game bot, it took me a fair deal of research to figure out what I need. There is a lot of misinformation from other sites going on making this even worse. Frankly, considering the extraordinarily large number of people that are commenting, and the high level of anxiousness they share, the comments have been surprisingly civil. So instead of treating these people like the scum of the earth, why not give them the benefit of the doubt instead of crying over spilled milk?

I'm guessing that is precisely the reason it hasn't been released yet. They've supposedly been sitting on this unlock for months, so it doesn't follow that they'd need to test it this long for an operating system that had already been released during that time unless they've added support for features related to 4.2.

I unfortunately activated my SIM card with t-mobile when I received my iPhone off eBay when I found out that they'd lied about the unlock working. If I'm not mistaken the time on that card will expire after a month if I don't top off (prepaid). I think it hasn't been that long yet, and I'm hoping I don't have to buy another one. I don't think you should have to be so careful with your vernacular like a politician lest you be labeled a troll. Shouldn't it be a good thing that people are excited about the impending release of the unlock? As an open source developer myself, I wish people were so enthusiastic about anticipating my releases. I've only actually seen maybe 2 truly disrespectful comments in the few days I've been killing time reading this. I'm not really understanding the rampant complaining about disrespect.

I'm curious as to how you define troll. I was under the impression that a troll was one who posts inflammatory messages in order to illicit an emotional response. I see no malicious intent in this sort of message, even though it may be against the unspoken rules of this particular comment system.

I think the one I am using is called something like "qik video" which isn't free from the app store. I'm pretty sure there was another one that also worked for 4.1 as well, but I can't recall what it was called.

No, it is not possible to block all trolls by IP address. For one thing, the word troll is loosely defined and more often equates to "person of differing opinion to popular belief." Secondly, the sheer volume of trolls makes such a procedure impractical. Finally, if one really cared they could simply utilize one of many proxies. You might ban an individual troll by IP address, but chances are that if they are truly a troll and not a "person of differing opinion," then they will likely already be familiar with dodging this type of ban. Wait... I changed my mind. You can ban all trolls by IP address. Simply ban the entire range of IPv4 and IPv6 addresses.

Do not update to 4.2.x. Wait until the next revision of ultrasn0w is released (sometime within a week or so). Then you should simply install it from Cydia and all will be well.

I haven't judged you in my previous comment. The only people you might say I judged were the dev team, whom I portrayed in a good light by my book, having formerly led a project that was vaguely similar. Your stance on eBay is a little unbelievable. Apparently if someone scams you it isn't their fault, its your own... lovely. I suppose if I were to be mugged, beaten, and then raped then it would be my fault as well.

I purchased my iPhone on eBay and was lied to about the unlock. Now how was that my fault? In this kind of situation, you should expect some people are going to be frustrated and will vent it. I'm sure the dev team is doing this because they enjoy the process and not because of brown nosers, and I doubt they will stop simply because of a few naysayers. Chill out and think about your own actions rather than spending your time judging others.
