Hi from Farfel's Farm. The $40 license is not the issue at all. We are fine with the USDA monitoring Farfel's welfare, but we object to their allocation of resources. The USDA (same division) licenses nearly 6,000 breeders in the U.S. including puppy mills that have 200 dogs in wire cages. These dogs' feet never touch the earth, and some of them are unable to walk (or much worse)! Pet stores that sell dogs are not regulated at all by the USDA. We oppose sales of dogs through retail pet stores, and we hold periodic fundraisers for rescue. We offer a free service to help you find a rescue dog that fits your needs. Our website has lots of links to rescue groups (www.farfels.com). The USDA's list of exhibitors includes only zoos, circuses and animal sanctuaries. Farfel's Farm is apparently the only retail pet store required to do this.

Farfel sits in the window because he wants to. He is a "watching" dog who loves to watch the comings and goings of all of the activity on Pearl Street. Farfel has always chosen to sleep in the window. The dogs in puppy mills have no choice about the wire cages they are forced to sit and sleep in for years. Out of the thousands of products we sell, there are certainly some that may be more expensive than elsewhere, but we make a real effort to be very competitive, and there are many more items that are less expensive than just about anywhere.

Hi from Jeff Richey. I have never opposed any running race on Pearl. In fact, we support all of the West End activities that make this such a fun area. The only activity I have ever opposed on Pearl Street was an event that allowed beer to be served on the street between 9th and 10th. In my opinion, drinking is more suitable in the more than 20 bars within a two block radius. Come see me Renegade88 and you'll find that I don't bite (or even bark loudly)!
