A Blog on All Things Windows Related : Symantec\'s Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Desktop Edition Review

The same account and password trick might work but I'm not going to be implementing it. The only reason why I tried to get them to connect was just to see if I could reproduce the "problem" you had. Since you now know that indeed you can't backup individual files and folders from client computers over the network, there is no incentive for me to get this to work anymore. Just for clarification, every computer has the Administrator account. It's built-in. However, by default in Windows 7 and Vista, it is disabled. The initial setup user account does not somehow replace this special Administrator account. That initial setup account is only made a member of the local administrators group instead so that it has all the privileges. But yes, I agree. It's all about a user's (or organization's) wants and needs. I still think that BESR 2010 is an excellent stand-alone backup program. I wasn't even aware of this problem of not being able to perform a remote backup of a client's individual files and folders until I read your comment. For that I am glad because I now have a better idea of when or when not to recommend this program to users. Thanks!

A Blog on All Things Windows Related : Symantec\'s Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Desktop Edition Review

My two computers are in a simple workgroup, not domain. Instructions say that you need to append the computer name with the username like this: computername\\username. However, that doesn't work at all. It just refuses to accept it along with the password to connect over the network. I also tried to manually install (not deploy) the agent on the other computer but it still refuses to accept the network connection. Totally frustrating as it can't even do something so simple. As for the remote folder and files backup, I know it sounds difficult but can't you try to configure a scheduled backup on each individual computer to backup what you want (folders and files) and then have it be stored on a server elsewhere? It's a hassle as you might have to map a network drive for each client computer but this should be a one-time procedure as future backups should then occur automatically according to the schedule. This totally defeats a unified backup management solution but if you can't perform a folder/file backup over the network for your clients, I don't see other options. But I guess you're right. If a product cannot meet your business needs, it's time to go elsewhere.

A Blog on All Things Windows Related : Symantec\'s Backup Exec System Recovery 2010 Desktop Edition Review

Well, this is pathetic. In attempts to try and reproduce your situation, I can't even get BESR to connect to my remote machine! This is sad because I have made sure to follow the instructions in the manual along with other tips such as disabling Simple File Sharing, enabling DCOM, and even disabling the firewall completely to no avail. I keep getting stuck where it asks me to input the remote computer's username and password. My two machines can see each other fine but for some reason, BESR will not accept my username and password! It's very frustrating as other users are also experiencing this issue from what I can see on Symantec's message forum: http://www.symantec.com/connect/forums/unable-con... Even manually installing the agent on my remote machine (rather than deploying it from my main machine) doesn't help one bit. I'm assuming you didn't encounter this problem? Anyways, in going over the product manual once again, I think you are right. You cannot backup individual files and folders over a remote computer as I can't find anything on this within the manual.

Hey Mital Thanks for the positive feedback. I'm sure that you are allowed to back up individual files and folder within a client OS such as Windows 7. I actually wrote about this in the article as I used the Desktop edition of BESR on a Windows 7 platform.. When you Define a New Backup job, the wizard will give you a choice of creating a full back up or to only backup individual files, folders, and file types. This section is labeled under Backing Up Specific Files/Folders. Scroll up until you see it.

Thanks for the suggestion Ryan. I'll definitely keep that program in mind. It looks very easy to use and I like how it promotes one thing and one thing only: the easy backup of your client's PST data and nothing more. With email data being so important these days and just as so for companies keeping up with regulatory compliance laws, I can see how this software can play a big role in an enterprise.

Thank you for the recommendation. However, from what I'm looking at, there are a lot of stuff I don't need that comes bundled with the suite, even in the Personal Edition SSuite. Not requiring Java or .NET is pretty cool but almost all the computers I work with, both are installed. In fact, I believe Windows 7 already comes packed with the .NET framework. Also, I don't think there is a Powerpoint like application with SSuite, which is a big deal for me. Nonetheless, I will give it a try just to see how compatible it is with the Microsoft Office suite. Thank you once again for the recommendation.

Dioguh Thanks so much for the feedback! Seriously, that issue was driving me insane. I'm so glad you took the time to research it and actually detail it here. However, I'm glad to inform you (if you didn't know already) that in the retail version of Windows 7, WmP12 clearly does not have the 'constant update' issue anymore. That was one of the main reason why a lot of people wanted to downgrade back to WMP11. I'm enjoying WMP12 right now with no problems whatsoever. Whatever the case may be, thank you posting your findings here. I will make a note at the beginning of the article to let other readers know.

I'm sorry about what happened and I apologize for not writing back earlier but you should have emailed me instead! Anyways, while that has never happened to me in the past, a little research shows that you are not alone as a lot of other users experience the same frustration as you. The good news is that you can download and install RevoUninstaller to get rid of Comodo Firewall. RevoUninstaller is a Add/Remove replacement for Windows and can uninstall applications even if they didn't come bundled with an uninstaller. http://www.revouninstaller.com/ I have just tried this in my virtual machine and everything worked perfectly as RevoUninstaller picked up the firewall application. If it still doesn't pick up, try using the Hunter Mode and target the Comodo application that way.

Alvin Thanks for the heads up! I had to create a new post in Blogger just to reflect the new URL due to that misspelling. As for the upgrade, I am so glad you found the article useful. Like you, I have struggled with that problem and it was driving me nuts. Cloning a disk is shouldn't be difficult at all considering how many third-party utilities are out there that helps us with the migration but somehow, Windows itself sticks its ugly head in where it don't belong! Hopefully other users out there will stumble upon this article or another before giving up and reformatting!

Bojco I'm a little confused. Are you trying to convert from HTML to PRC? If so, in Mobipocket Creator, there is a link to import from an existing HTML file. After the conversion process, go to the output folder and you should have the resulting .PRC file to load in your Kindle. If you are looking for the HTML file from a converted PDF eBook, then it should also reside in the output folder after conversion. I hope that answers your question. If not, let me know and I'll see what I can do. As for Calibre, I'm mostly using it to convert from the ePub format to .Mobi. For the most part I've had success with it but many other times, it messes up the word structure similar to what you have experienced. That's why converting documents from one format to another is such a hassle but I guess we have no choice. Until the day the Kindle will support every format out there, it's going to be an on-going struggle!

Binaryman Sorry for the super late reply! Directory Report does indeed seem like it can do a lot but for $25, I would rather stick with the free WinDirStat. Besides, you can completely get rid of the "colored blocks" within WinDirStat if you wish to and you'll get to work with a view similar to that of Directory Report. I doubt WinDirStat can compare to Directory Report features-wise but for users who just want to see what is gobbling up their hard drive space, it's hard to beat the free WinDirStat.
