My family and I live with serious fears regarding the word 'vacuum': Why does this word have two 'U' s in it? If we could all agree to spell it with only one 'U', and then simply add an 'e' in order to make it sound like a long 'U', all would be well. Unfortunately, NO ONE in Canada thought of THAT, so we are forever forced to spell it with two 'U's. To add fuel to the fire, everytime that this offending appliance is released from it's lair, I find myself alone; a warrior battling both the dust of retreating family members as well as the injustices of grammar.
