Thanks for the explanations! Had to take a break and now I'm back to researching this again. If I remember correctly, I asked MuscleNerd this question about a year ago for the fw3.x.x discussions. I *think* he said Pwnage doesn't require the signing, but can't remember if that also referred to fw that wasn't being signed by Apple anymore. I have to see if Twitter will let me scroll that many months back. We had a brief twitter convo about it. I retweeted the question to him, crossing my fingers he'll be interested in answering again among all the questions he gets.

Congrats on joining the Mac Nation. :)

The easiest way to download Pwnage is to use Firefox instead of Safari, or set your Safari preferences so it doesn't automatically open files after downloading. You need to install Firefox first since it doesn't come pre-loaded on Macs. When you download Pwnage, Firefox will ask what you want to do. Choose Save to your desktop. Don't let Firefox open the file.

I like the Mac-iPhone tutorials at hackthatphone. iClarified is good too. We're not allowed to put links here so you have to google them.

I'll post here what I find. I'll probably just give a go later tonight or tomorrow if I don't find any concrete infos. I have my SHSH files and my old custom 3.1.2 ipsw if anything goes wrong.

Thanks! I'm searching around to find my old notes on this...and to see whether I can find the old posts on it from last year.

PS: The reason I thought that was because I sorta remember learning that Pwnage somehow gets around the need for Apple to sign the fw when it makes the custom ipsw.

Whoops...now I think I'm a bit confused. :p

If my 3GS is on the Pwnage Train and Apple is not signing 4.0 anymore, I thought I could still use Pwnage 4.01 to make a custom 4.0 ipsw and option+restore to it in order to upgrade to 4.0. Am I wrong?

My 3GS = 3.1.2, 04.26.08, old bootrom, always used Pwnage for JB

I thought SHSH files were important for downgrading a 3GS to an old fw that wasn't being signed for which I didn't have a custom ipsw. As long as I have (or can make) a custom ipsw, I should be able to option+restore to it. Am I not remembering something correctly?

Thanks for your help!

Thanks for the info! I suspected that. :) So why would the newer version and the backup be different sizes? Is one size correct and the other invalid?

Thanks Livy! I also don't think Apple signing is needed to create the custom ipsw. Wanted to check if I remembered correctly.

About restoring to a custom ipsw, I was under the impression that if we have a custom ipsw and already are JBed, we don't need SHSH blobs to restore to the custom ipsw...*unless* it's a 3GS that is trying to downgrade. (Though, part of me remembers that the SHSH isn't needed if I'm downgrading to my own custom ipsw for an older fw...but, I never needed to downgrade so I'm not sure anymore what the steps are.)

Here's why I ask. My 3GS is still on 3.1.2, jbed using Pwnage w/ modem 04.26.08. I want to upgrade to 4.0, and I'm thinking Pwnage 4.01 should still work for me creating and restoring to a custom 4.0 ipsw because I don't need Apple to sign an official 4.0 in the process. Right?

I don't think Saurik stopped saving the files. Cydia is just overloaded with SHSH requests the past couple of days. Use Tiny Umbrella. Check the "Advanced" box. Then select getting your SHSH files from Apple instead of Cydia. When Tiny Umbrella is done caching your files, save them to your computer.

Question: Does Pwnage 4.01 require that Apple still signs official fw 4.0 in order to create a custom 4.0 ipsw (for a 3GS)?

Thanks for any anwers!
