What a good question! I heard a very interesting story about the shepard and his sheep. If there is a lamb that is always getting lost or getting in harms way, a shepard will break the sheeps leg for it's own good. Then the shepard will lovingly set the lambs leg and will carry the sheep at all times. The lamb gets used to being near the shepard and will not wander away. He is the lamb that stays by the shepard.
