There's not one plot in DA2 that couldn't have been written to have the Warden as the protagonist. I think it's obvious that Bioware just wanted to get a sequel to market as fast as they could and that meant scratching everything you built, character wise, in the previous game.

The game is in a fantasy setting. There are limitless ways to get the Warden anywhere or even anywhen in Thedas. I'm also sure that the only threat to the Wardens are not darkspawn. Besides, the Wardens have never had any problem injecting themselves into the politics of a region when it suits their purposes.

From what I've read, the anime shared nothing more than the Lensman and character names from the books. Otherwise, it told a completely different story and isn't worth the bother if you're looking for an authentic Lensman story.
