Researching and sticking with a charity is terrific advice. I also find that as a designer, my services are welcome, and as money is tight all around, it's comforting to know that I have something in addition to the actual paper money to contribute, since I don't always have the paper money readily available. I regularly look for opportunities to help where I am able, and find lately that consulting with other small businesses in an area where I am especially competent is not only helping others but is personally fulfilling as well.
