I think they handled it well, though. I'll bet they go back to the restaurant at a later date. They obviously wanted to be incognito and being turned away at a busy restaurant unless one makes a reservation is a fact of life for everyone else in the world. I'd say nobody has anything to be embarrassed about.

People forget that many of the "luxury foods" that are now hoi polloi specialties started out as Po'Folks food. In the late 19th century, lobster was so disparaged among the upper classes (it looks like a big, ugly insect of the sea) that only poor people ate it, because it was summarily discarded by fishermen and cast away to the poor. You couldn't give it away.

It was only after the rich realized how good it was that the price skyrocketed and it became a "gourmet" food. Pizza cheese is the same way. "Fresh Mozzarella" with various kinds of seasonings is now exorbitantly expensive but basically it's a Joe Sixpack food.

Happens to me all the time. I met the King and Queen of Sweden last week at an antique show, where they were picking over some old Norman Rockwell figurines and they wanted to know where a good place to stay was. I said: "Well, the Days Inn is nice" but where were they going to put their security guards? Then I realized: "Whoa! They're the King and Queen of Sweden!"

Now we know how much it costs to hire someone with that kind of talent: Amanpour's salary.

This is the kind of thinking that brought Barack Obama to the Presidency, and it's the kind of thinking that's going on in his White House. It's nuts, of course, but when has Daley ever had to explain himself in full sentences? He hasn't had to, because he doesn't make arguments -- he makes proclamations, and pretty blockheaded ones at that. But he's Da Mayor.
