Regarding the "hipster hives", you're right. I don't care how people choose to live. However, I am concerned about the increased density that this type of living en masse brings to the Boulder Valley. The quality of life that brought many to Boulder will slip sharply and irrevocably at some population figure and corresponding density. Some may argue it's already past that point. I'm sure the breaking point will be at a small fraction of London's population.
You may find yourself on the other side of this argument at some point, as the incoming masses start to exceed what you perceive to be the breaking point that impacts your quality of life.

Agreed with betsyboulder - use that energy in a more positive direction. The window of opportunity is there.

I used to work in the New York metro area , so yes, I have been to Manhattan. I traveled (and currently travel) regularly to quite a selection of major cities around the world. Those experiences are a large part of the reason why I moved to Boulder in the 80s. When I moved here, although I ticked up the population count by 1, I didn't do so with an intent to change the dynamic of the town. I didn't insist that Boulder adapt its rules to accomodate me (a grad student who couldn't afford a single family home at the time).
My comment above may sound sensational, but I don't see a logical stopping point for your increased density wishes. Once we fill the east side of town with 4 story hipster hives, then what? Does it stop there? When does the height restriction buckle to the pressure?
I have to ask in turn - have you ever lived in a big city? Given that you don't want to live in Denver or Manhattan, why do you want to put Boulder on such a growth path?

It's especially crazy given your proximity to Denver.
If you want to live in Boulder - you're by all means welcome. Those low density neighborhoods you seem to despise do have homes that come up for sale. Yes they tend to be expensive, but you should be able to live wherever you can afford to.

I just wanted to point out that Boulder also has aspirations to spread this folly into the County, and the residents there have no vote regarding this whatsoever.

The dissent encountered in various editorials and comments here are a direct consequence of a government that isn't listening, and perhaps doesn't care to.
Specifically regarding the airbnb editorial, where is your sense of humor?
