Hi,

just to clarify, it all depends on an arrangement reached between the charity and the network operator. This can be as high as 100%, but predominantly depends on the country where the charity is hosted, the network operator(s) chosen and the charity itself (among other considerations).

Hi Peter,

Most reputable companies such as Clickatell is a member of WASPA <a href="http:// (http://www.waspa.org.za/members/index.php)" target="_blank"> <a href="http://(http://www.waspa.org.za/members/index.php)" target="_blank">(http://www.waspa.org.za/members/index.php). They have to adhere to a strict code of conduct that allow the public to unsubscribe.

The easiest way to unsubscribe to a service is to reply “stop” to a SMS you received or to contact the company you received the SMS from directly.

Another alternative is to look at the number you got the SMS from, look on <a href="http://www.smscode.co.za" target="_blank">www.smscode.co.za who the company is that sent you the SMS and contact them.

If you are still not happy that your request is being honored – then you can also escalate the matter to WASPA. They will then investigate on your behalf – at no cost to you. The link for this is http://www.waspa.org.za/code/complaint.shtml.

Let me know if this helps, Peter.

Regards,

Leo

Very true and very nicely put. Fact is that all service-based businesses can use SMS to stay in touch with past clients - if the service was good, opt-in customers won't mind receiving periodic communication. Thanks for the comment, Bowraven!

Hi Tamar,

thanks for the comment. Getting contacts to market to during the 2010 Soccer World Cup requires some strategy. First and foremost you'll have to read up on the regulations regarding unsolicited SMS for the country you want to market to. In other words, if you want to market to individuals who live in South Africa, then you'll have to read up on the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act of 2002. That being said, here are a couple of ways to get contacts to opt-in on your bulk SMS campaigns:

1. Use existing media to advertise your SMS service. This can range from online ads, radio and TV ads, in-store displays, notice boards, etc.

2. Offer an incentive - everyone loves getting something for free, a discount or something very useful. Put yourself in your target audience's shoes and ask "What's in it for me?" - that's what people will be asking themselves when deciding to join your SMS service or not, so make it worth their while.

If you want more information on the legalities and how to get opt-ins, read this post:
