You can either wait for a new jailbreak, or use Spirit. As long as you have iTunes 9.1.1 or earlier, it should work just fine. You can sync an iPhone jailbroken with Spirit on iTunes 9.2, but you can't jailbreak an iPhone with Spirit on 9.2. It won't work and will only send your iPhone into a boot loop.

TinyUmbrella should allow you to save 4.0 SHSH without having 4.0 installed.

Find Notepad in your start menu and right click it... select run as Administrator and then select Open and browse for teh file. Change the part near the bottom that says .txt files to *.* any. You should see the hosts file and be able to open, edit, and save it then.

Might not want to post your entire serial number... not safe for you. You should have the old bootrom judging from the 919. (phone was made in the 19th week of 2009. Anything under the 40th week of 2009 should be the old bootrom, which is iboot 359.3) No need to downgrade to unlock. If you are already jailbroken with Spirit on 3.1.3, just search for ultrasn0w on Cydia. Only reason to downgrade to 3.1.2 is if you want to use Pwnage to jailbreak and install a custom 4.0 firmware. Best to stay on 3.1.3 and wait for the new jailbreak which should be out pretty soon after Apple's rumored firmware update next week.

Pretty soon I am sure. Probably when Apple releases the 4.0.1 update. There will be one... hang in there. :)

Yep, a little complicated for most people, but it does work. I have a 3GS (OLD BOOTROM) that was JBed with Spirit on 3.1.3, and was able to restore to a custom 4.0 JBed firmware. I am sure this will be deleted soon, because we are not allowed to post links to other sites at all. But thank you again for sharing this! You made my night. It worked perfectly.

You can downgrade itunes. Google for an older version to download, there are plenty out there. After uninstalling and reinstalling the older one, make sure to move or remove the file iTunes Library.itl in the music/itunes folder. It will give you an error saying the file is from a newer version and won't open itunes if you don't. I believe at the apple site there are instructions to rebuild your library after deleting the iTunes Library.itl file. We can't give out links on these fourms, but the apple support page ends with /kb/HT1451 good luck

Make sure you are using iTunes 9.2 also. Like zzoka said, if all else fails, use saurik's server and restore back to 3.1.1 or 3.1.2 and jailbreak with redsnow or black rain and try again. Kind of like taking a step backwards to make a leap forward. Good luck.

You should still be able to use Spirit to jailbreak 3.1.3 if you have an activated phone then and unlock with ultrasn0w if you don't care about 4.0. Just make sure you are using iTunes 9.1.1 or an earlier version before trying spirit, because iTunes 9.2 will send the phone into a boot loop with Spirit. In you need hacktivation, you will have to wait for a new tool to be released. :(

Question: If I update a 3G and use redsn0w to jailbreak, can I restore my setting and stuff from a backup on Itunes or do I need to set it up as a new phone?

From what I have learned by reading the text at the top and the comments here, not yet you can't. Unless you have SHSH for 3.1.2 and can downgrade and jailbreak with anything other than Spirit.

Search for ultrasn0w on Cydia and install it. Should unlock all basebands to date. Oh yea, and be sure to turn off 3G networking. Some people are having trouble getting service with it on.
