His early stuff was awful, but lately he's come into his own. He was good and likeable in Upside of Anger. BUT, his performances in Dances with Wolves (the most pretentious tripe I've ever seen) and Water World may forever mar all subsequent performances. He's definitely gotten better with age.

Herzog's Grizzly Man was superb. I will definitely see this movie, though perhaps not at the theater. One thing I find curious. Why the desire to apprehend God's design implied in the question "why does God allow the death penalty?" The only thing worse than asking such a question is the hubris inherent in the presumption to attempt an answer. It's more than paradoxical to employ Comte's positivism to understand God's design.
