And you are RIGHT! You\'ll never see CFII and/or MEI as part of the CFI certificate number. That\'s the point.

Thanks for the comment Mike. And congratulations on getting your AGI done, and happy that your daughter has interest in aviation as we all do. You are right about AGI privileges and limitations. IGI should be the next goal for you, obviously. :-). By Christmas?
BTW, a few days ago, FAA increased the number of hours an instrument student can log in a AATD towards the 40 hours instrument time required. And as an IGI you can teach all of those 20 hours as well. Only 15 hours out of the 40 have to be with a CFII.

Hi Bob. Thanks for visiting our site and leaving a comment. We posted this article on our site in 2012, and I agree with you that a lot has changed since then. However, I am sure the information was complete and current at the time when this article was first posted on our site.
There are often times when we post information obtained or compiled from pubic domains, like faa.gov on this site; and not only this is legally acceptable, in our opinion, but also the expectation.
We conducted on online search - Bob Jex FAA Ways to renew CFI, and came across this FAA AFS Newsletter published in 2006. Sure enough you were the author of the article "TEN WAYS TO RENEW YOUR CFI CERTIFICATE".

You don\'t need to take any written for the reinstatement. Unfortunately, you will have to take any ONE of the flight instructor (CFI, CFII or MEI) checkride. You can take this either with a DPE or with the local FSDO.
To get a ground instructor certificate however, you will need to take just the AGI written, but this can not be used for reinstatement.

Sure, and agreed. If you chose to take the CFII practical to reinstate, then bring in a proper instrument airplane. Same goes for MEI. However, if you chose to use CFI ASE to reinstate, and have not flown or taught in the last 10 years, then at the examiner\'s discretion, we might need to use a complex, or not.
The best way - call up the examiner and run it by with him before we even start the training. And this is pretty much what we do here. We appreciate your contribution here Jim, and wish you all the best.

This is a great way to learn the instrument procedures for much cheaper. Flies and feels like a real airplane.

First off, congratulations Terry! 90% pass rate on 60 endorsements is awesome! Keep it up. To answer your question, if I were you, I\'d probably go with IGI as well. IGIs are authorized to teach instruments to airplane and helicopter instrument rating applicants, but the IR procedures are exactly the same anyways. With AGI, one is authorized to teach helicopters, gliders etc as well, and yes, there are a few (not very many) category specific questions. So, yes, go for IGI.
