But I also don't think she's been treated fairly by her supporters. I think Palin's supporters, in finding their Golden Child, have given her a lot of momentum she absolutely cannot handle, and it has caused her to do and say some remarkably unflattering things while she and her family are in the spotlight. Her supporters make endless excuses for this and that is to be expected, but it does give the media quite a bit of ammo and that is why the cycle continues. I plain and simply wish McCain had not picked her. I would have voted for McCain *if* Palin hadn't been shoehorned into his campaign as some PC marketing strategy to win Independent women to the Republican vote. McCain had more experience than Obama, had demonstrated his courage not just in war but by going against his own party as a default position, and much more closely represented my values -- although, Obama does too, *some* of them. I think Palin is one of the worst things to ever happen to the conservative movement. She epitomizes the "think with your gut, act without consequences" undercurrent of the less intellectual side of the movement, which is the wrong direction for the movement to be going. Conservativism before Reagan WAS an intellectual movement, and that's a good thing, because it welcomes dialog. Palinism does the opposite: it stops the conversation in its tracks. This is the overwhelming impression I get from talking with her supporters, and from following her public life for the last three years. I don't think this would be the case if she had finished her governership in Alaska, perhaps done more public service, and THEN ran for higher office. I believe the extremely poor timing of her entering our public discourse is what created the monster we have today. I sincerely wish it had been otherwise, but it isn't. It's not her character I have a problem with since I don't know her; it's her actions in public, the persona. And that persona was created by timing and circumstance. The Big Quit, the endless gaffes about US law and history, using her children to get political capital in the movement.... these debits in her public stock (as I see them) would have been severely reduced if she had waited an election cycle or two to run and built up her credibility instead.
