You say that based on what?

It's not about winning the "hearts" of the police, it's about securing the support of the people at large. If the police are corrupt and unwilling to fight then that's going to lose a lot more "hearts" than a soldier telling them to do their job. Putting a bit of stick about is better in the long term.

Plus I don't buy your veterans argument for a moment.

I'll bear it in mind, but the truth is that most observers won't really have much an idea about what the outcome is until a lot further down the line. That's part of the reason why I didn't comment.

I disagree. It should only be used in circumstances where its use is genuinely ironic or witty. Such as an MP selling stolen goods: fencegate.
