Personally, I would love this. I have instant-viewing credits with Netflix that I never end up using, but if I could stream Netflix to my iPod over wifi, I could watch stuff while I'm on my exercise bike.

That's good to know.... I've since read that part of the policy so I can confirm Apple reserved the right to retain their commission, but I guess they either exercise that clause only in certain cases, or have since rethought their position. So the GV devs will "only" end up with zero instead of in the red.

I'm glad, but this is probably a temporary victory. Judging from other problematic developers, I expect he'll modify his business practices slightly and then come back under a different name. It's like spam - as long as the money is there and the risks and expenses are low, there's no incentive for him to stay away for long.

Apple should force him to refund users for all apps that infringed on copyrights. That kind of expense might give him pause...

I believe the requirement that developers pay the refund is in the standard App Store contract that developers sign. So the developer's only recourse is to try and make it a publicly embarrassing issue for Apple- they probably have no legal recourse.

To make matters worse, I believe the developer pays the WHOLE refund. For example, if the app costs 99 cents and Apple gets 30 cents of that, the developer loses 30 cents per refund. It's an atrocious policy to apply indiscriminantly. In the case of a negligent developer it amounts to punative damages, and a deterrent. But in this case the developer was in no way at fault for Apple's decision, and should not have to lose money.

I hope Apple introduces exceptions to this heavy-handed policy.

As more mobile platforms support Google Voice, the more pressure on Apple to allow. For example, there already is an unofficial client for Palm Pre. I expect Apple will have to relax their stance at some point, or they open the door for Palm Pre and others to have a differentiating feature.
Also worth pointing out that Google Voice is blocked everywhere, not just the US, so this does not appear to be a result of the terms of AT&T's exclusive deal with Apple, as some have claimed.

I really didn't understand the appeal of this app when my son bought it, but it's one of the few that he constantly returns to. Here's another reason to like it: in a recent update they added a version of the game Doodle Jump, played in the clouds above the island!

On the face of it this is a good start. However, it is as open to abuse by the developers as other parts of the App Store. For example, I saw an app recently, a very plain, simple Othello clone, that was named something like "XXX Sexy Othello" or something like that, to get attention. Why Apple approved it with that name is beyond me... The tags allow the same kind of abuse, but more subtle. For example, will anything stop me from putting the names of best-selling apps into my tags?

I don't claim to know what the answer is, but more needs to be done. There needs to be more oversight, and it should be easier for users to report abuse.
