Wow. Talk about a gun fetish! By the look at the photos, he wasn't just a collector of old guns. He had plenty of modern weaponry, too, and he didn't seem interested in selling them, or he would have by this point. No, chalk this one up to being an extreme gun nut. There are plenty of 'em in these parts, though hardly to such a level.

You should actually learn about things before speaking, Hewhoo. Or are you purposely trying to mislead? 677 shootings were investigated for that study. Many were undoubtedly gang-related. Most were not. Have you actually read the paper? I have.

Ceasefire Oregon is not affiliated in any way with CeaseFire (to whom you refer, located in Chicago), despite the similar name. Neither organization had anything to do with the study.

According to studies, you are 4.5 times MORE likely to be shot if you carry a concealed handgun, compared to an unarmed person: http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn17922-carry...

This is already the 10th shooting in our area this year! For perspective, last year was a record year, with 15 shootings, and we haven't even gotten out of the fourth month. This time last year, there had been 5 shootings. We have to do more to keep guns out of the hands of those who would misuse them.

Sounds like the deputies were well within their duty to open fire. I applaud them for trying to use non-lethal weapons first. I'm glad the woman hasn't died. The fact that she was high on meth and THC explains why the tazer didn't work. I don't like to hear about anyone being shot, but it sounds to me like the deputies made the right call, for their safety. Our men and women in blue are heroes every day, and I appreciate them putting themselves in harm's way for us.

You do have a right to defend your home. You are making unfounded assumptions about me. The problem I have is the idea of forming a posse to do it for you, like they myth of the Wild West.

Looking out for neighbors and reporting suspicious activities is a great thing. We should all do that. Having your neighbors act as judge, jury, and executioner, however, is a completely different story, and has too often ended in tragedy. There are alternatives to gun ownership to help harden your home and prevent invasions: http://newtrajectory.blogspot.com/2011/01/alterna....
