Yeah, I got ahead of myself. And I actually get the rejected title. That makes sense.

So I've already been called out on the fact that Criss Angel identifies himself as the Mind Freak, which would identify the phrase 'Mind Freak' as a noun. I guess I had managed to forget about that (or tune it out completely) as I was writing the review, so it was a poor bit of copy-editing on my part. I guess that I don't think that this really changes my point that it feels like they were just sort of throwing words around to come up with 'mind freak'.

JustPressPlay : How Bruce Lee Changed The World

I can respect that it introduced a lot of people to Lee, but I still think that it could have had a little more focus. 'Dragon' does not get at everything that made Lee such an important figure, but it did feature some of the most impressively choreographed martial arts scenes ever to be in an American movie, was respectful of Lee and his origins, and featured a commanding performance by Jason Scott Lee, who should have been given much bigger things. And if you're going to do your own Lee biopic, better hurry up: Zhang Yimou is looking to do one, too.

JustPressPlay : District 9

While my initial guess (that nobody involved in the film had ever been to South Africa) was proven badly incorrect (Blomkamp spent most of his life there), the film seems to be proposing essentially the exact same sort of politics that have been in films such as Mississippi Burning and Dances With Wolves since the late 1980s, being that one should always be nice to minorities, but various creative decisions on the parts of the film-makers negate any real commitment to that goal. What about the actual Africans depicted in the film? Why does the story have to be told from the perspective of the white guy at all? Basically, it's a well-meaning idea whose execution invites more scrutiny than it can handle. It does have energy, but to me it was never able to really keep with it because it never stuck with a single format, and thus never really felt like a documentary. At least Cloverfield held onto its ridiculous premise for an entire movie. It might do well on home video, but as I said, I think it's a while before any one figures out this big-budget fake documentary thing.

JustPressPlay : Dakota Skye

You are right to point out my frustration with the genre, and that probably affected my opinion of the film. I cannot, however, fully understand why this needed to be a high school film. I thought that the relationships between the characters were very typical and predictable, and I wish that they had done more with the superhero conceit, especially since the DVD box that I reviewed from advertised it so heavily. I want to commend all of you, though, for disagreeing with me in the most civil way that any one has ever done for any of my reviews.

JustPressPlay : Eden Log

Jay, I mention information like that because all film reviewing is subjective. I've always hated film reviews that say things like 'it will make you cry' and 'it will stop your heart', because the odds are it won't, and the review is rendered faulty. These are my experiences, this is what I've done, and these were my reactions. I'm not even going to tell you that you would be wrong if you liked the movie. I'd just want you tell me why. And look, I'm fully aware that anyone can get into film school. There are no illusions there, and if you want me to make a long post about that, it would be serious self-indulgent. And yes, I more or less got what was going on. It's the future, and there's a big plant. I thought they spent too much time obscuring the story with artsy flourishes to hide the fact that this story isn't worthy of a feature-length running time. And actually, as best as I can tell, Transformers is technically in the same genre as Eden Log. I'm happy for you to disagree with me, and I would give it another chance if you gave me a reason why I should. I reserve the right to change my opinion. Anyway, I'm sorry that this review 'learned you' what it did.

"And I’ve got to be honest: there’s more than a little charm to this program." "It doesn’t take much to be overcome by this show’s sheer earnestness, or the relative elaborateness with which this universe is constructed." "After watching these four episodes, I can honestly say that I’m thinking about getting one of the full seasons on DVD." Did you actually read the review?
