I love this new alliance between SF Symphony #sfsymphony and Drink Me magazine #drinkme. Hoping for lots of concerts with discounts in the future.

The news says "malaria-carrying mosquitoes" are attracted to beer drinkers, but I doubt that those mosquitoes have any different taste than mosquitoes that don't carry malaria. In any case, the news is disturbing since I'm going to Costa Rica soon, and I certainly plan to drink beer. Come to think of it, I've _always_ been 'that guy' in any group that mosquitoes flock (swarm) towards.

I read a great article (story) about olives and martinis a few years ago. It was by Harold Morowitz in a collection of his essays (in "The Thermodynamics of Pizza.") Harold talked about the history of the olive, and how amazing it was that something practically inedible had originally been prepared with a veritable poison -- lye -- for some brave idiot genius to consume. Harold also goes on about gin and its unlikely mix of ingredients.

Would love to try some Gaea Olives sometime.

For those wondering, like I was, what "Metaxa" is (used in the 'Sunrise in Athens' recipe): a web search reveals that it is a "Greek brandy and wine spirit matured in oak casks." Website: www.metaxa.com

I've never tried it. Any opinions?

That Sunday blue law is not unique to Texas; a number of states have the same law. Several other states have decided to allow liquor sale on Sundays in the past few years -- I'd be curious to know if liquor store owners in those states benefited or suffered from the revocation of the blue law. I wonder if there's a graph of liquor sales over time that would shed light on all this.

Brightly colored drinks tend to have juice, grenadine, syrup, what have you. Many guys don't enjoy these types of fruity sweet alcoholic beverages. I enjoy some sweet drinks, but usually those tend to have a robust alcohol flavor to them (like whiskey cocktails), and a more subdued color.
