Kara - The Hobbit – A Now Extended Journey

There are 3 reasons that The Hobbit should only be one film: 1.It was written for children and the story is paced that way - which makes it accessible to EVERYone - not just the rabid Tolkein fans. 2. LOTR was severely bloated with slo-mo and ring-staring when so much more of that amazing story could have been told with the stupendous amount of screen time available to 3 feature-length films. As mentioned above, The Hobbit doesn't have enough material to absorb all of the trilogy's self-indulgences, so I shudder to think what its time will be spent on...fish-eyed closeups of distressed dwarves? BRING ON SMAUG. 3. Most Importantly: The Hobbit's real draw is Smaug. The less time it takes to get the TERRIFYING DRAGON and the Battle of the Five Armies, the better.

Marion is trying to work through her feelings about her mother's death. In fact the writer/director/actress Julie Delpy was working through the same issues about her own mother (who had recently died) during the filmmaking process, as she made clear repeatedly in interviews at the time, e.g. http://www.sundaymercury.net/entertainment-news/c... http://www.thisislincolnshire.co.uk/Comedy-therap... http://cineuropa.org/2011/it.aspx?t=interview&amp... The film begins with a puppet show put on by Marion - and Marion/Delpy's impersonation of someone with a brain tumour is another form of play-acting - a way of identifying with her dead mother, much as Marion sells off her own soul later in the film as a conceptual art project, and then almost immediately regrets what she has done. She is, in her way, trying to come to terms with loss and death (both major themes in the film). You don't have to approve of her impersonation - personally I never felt that we were meant to. Certainly Mingus is horrified by what she has done, and his perspective is surely as much a contributory part of the film's ideology as Marion's. I also fail to see how the film is in any way making a comment, whether positive or negative, on people with actual inoperable tumours. Rather it is dramatising the confused mind state of its female protagonist, and showing her, not for the first or last time, behaving questionably.

Its not appropriate to make light of those with brain tumors if they cant equally make light of the phrases nigger, spic etc with that imitative child character they had dealing pot in the movie, The women observing the drug dealer child should have said nigger there's some timely dark humor left out. I mentioned apples, and you're talking about oranges. What you speak of has dittley squat to do with the sections of the plot which I have made reference to. Don't confuse what I was referencing with something entirely different. Bullshitting a neighbor is not a tragedy and does not support a pretense of terrible circumstance. The dark humor of the entire movie with their light humor of her fathers french translation would have been better if her father used the word NIGGER theres some fucken dark humor lost in translation for you clearly they knew better and respect for some but not others is not acceptable.

We are also, surely, supposed to regard her pretense as terrible. Sometimes humour comes precisely from what makes us uncomfortable.

L_Wit_Tumor - 2 Days In New York

There are movies with dark humor and then there is this. I am a fan of dark humor, this was not dark humor. Neighbor catches french sister and her friend in apartment elevator smoking pot, and turns out the neighbor too speaks french. Next morning the Marion (Delpy) encounters the same woman and to get passed the woman's anger about the family getting high in the building elevator, she tells the woman she has an inoperable brain tumor. As a result the woman's husband comes up to with sympathy provide some help. This is not even remotely dark humor. There is no pathological liar in this plot, it is misplaced and not funny. Films promote how people in society think and what becomes acceptable to joke about about. This is not a movie about cancer where they show the good, bad and ugly through appreciative humor. It is a rotton devaluing view that encourages people to joke about imitating retarded kids and other forms disrespect. It is no more humorous than saying it is funny to call black people the N#@@&$ word. THAT WOULD BE FUNNY TOO IN THIS PARTICULAR MOVIE, considering the contents, but the kind of disrespect that is made for people like myself who actually have an inoperable tumor is no different than saying nigger. If that offends anyone clearly you lack an appreciation for dark humor. THAT IS ESSENTIALLY WHAT YOU ARE SAYING. Though it doesnt make it right now does it, but even though i dont use the N word I've certainly made my point. It is not a behavior that should be encouraged in jokes among social circles just as the N word should not be encouraged for frequent use. THAT IS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE FILM AND MUSIC INDUSTRY TO THINK ABOUT HOW THEY ARE SHAPING CULTURE AND WHATS ACCEPTABLE. Saying Nigger is not (which is why they didnt use it in the movie) NEITHER IS MAKING LIGHT EXCUSE WITH THE LIES OF AN INOPERABLE BRAIN TUMOR. OTHERWISE THE WORD NIGGER WOULD BE FUNNY ALSO!!!!

Shaun R - 2 Days In New York

First off - I've not seen the film in question, so I can't comment on the content of this particular film. But to say that you can't laugh at things like this, is something I don't agree with. IMO, humour and laughter as dark as it can sometimes be, is an extremely powerful tool or weapon to utilise when trying to deal with life-shattering news such as this. A relative of mine was diagnosed with cancer and it was the making light of the situation through humour that helped us all through it. For me, the key issue would be as to whether the subject matter was dealt with tastefully. 50/50, American Splendour, Funny People and to a certain extent, Breaking Bad are examples of such. If the subject matter in the film was not dealt with tastefully then I would agree with you 100%. But from what I've heard from various reviews, it doesn't look like this is the case with many reviews generally stating that "it's heart is firmly in the right place". I suppose what I'm trying to say is - laughing at things, such as cancer and tumours, makes it less frightening and oppressive should we ever be unfortunate to suffer from them in anyway. For me, that's a very important thing to have in any culture.

Personally I was unenamored with both King Kong (needless remake) and The Lovely Bones (a half arsed adaptation that, in all honesty, left out half the original novel. i know adaptations as a rule have ot do this but this left out a good third of the plot.) so, post lord of the rings its safe to say that jackson's output has been somewhat... lacking. this is coming from someone who only saw lord of the rings in it's entirety last year. only time will tell. three years of time to be exact.

Padraig - The Dark Knight Rises

Though I preferred TDKR to TDK, for me it still wasn't quite up there with Batman Begins. For me the weight of the franchise rests on the shoulders of the first film; it so completely succeeded in reinventing the Batman franchise and set the tone and bar for the following Nolan releases that the 2nd and 3rd would never completely satisfy on the same terms. I first saw TDK on release week and loved it as much as anyone else, until I saw it a second time and wondered really whether I'd seen the same film. I found it to have real pacing problems, Christian Bale at his pompous best (or worst?), and during any scene Ledger's Joker wasn't present I was asking "Where did Ledger's Joker go?", so totally does he dominate TDK. As for TDKR I thoroughly enjoyed it, but I do have issues with it. Hardy was fantastic as Bane, and any voice issues are not as problematic as the "Batman Growl". I'm not his biggest fan but Bale was the best I'd seen him for a long time. Again, there were pacing problems, and no real sense of timing - as Wayne disappears into the hole and shortly after POW it's the depth of winter and Wayne is free again. None of these problems bothered me as much as - why are the Gotham police such pushovers? Is Blake the only cop who cares? The whole peace time/war time argument doesn't wash for me - it would breed incompetence and sluggishness, sure, but not SUCH complacency as we see here. In the first shoot out, not 20 minutes in, the commissioner and a full SWAT team pursue a gun-toting gang into the sewers. By my count we see 4-5 officers shot down by a sniper, 3-4 BLOWN UP in the sewers, not to mention the Commissioner himself disappears after them. Blake wishes to investigate, but the commanding officer berates him as "a hot head"? And continues to complain about Gordon and his "hot-heads", "We could do with a few less hot-heads around here"? A cinematic convention of city police is that of the biggest gang in town, the "legit gang" that you don't mess with, and will certainly come down hard on a cop-killer. This rings especially true in a film set in what is so clearly an allegory for New York. The Blake character evidenced these ideas perfectly, but what I found hard to believe was that he was the only one. Apparently it takes all 3000 of them being buried alive under the city to galvanise GPD into a willing deterrent. They can push us around, shoot us down, hospitalise us, run us over, make us look like idiots, but burying us alive!? That's just TOO much! This may sound niggly and specific, but if it is so minor a detail to pick up on then it is surely indicative of larger problems that I haven't noticed. I agree I wasn't nearly so bothered by any issues with the Avengers, which may be unfair, but I also agree that Nolan's Batman wishes to be taken very seriously. Perhaps the fact we are taking it so seriously is an extremely high compliment. That, and I do not agree for a second that it's a '12'.
