To my mind though, it may be somewhat necessary, because you can't have the kind of tension ratcheting that creates the great episodes like "the Other Woman" every time, else the show would sort of crack somehow. I think that the major plot elements this season have been much more thought provoking and subtly done than any from last season (though it was so long ago I can barely remember). Pete's dissolution into lower and lower snakyness, Don's struggle with Megan's modern sensibilities 180° from his own about what her role in their marriage should be. Peggy and Joan's evolution, Betty's food addiction, etc. The alternating strong/weak is no better illustrated than in last week's Harry Crane plot.It all seemed beyond farcical, like a bad episode of the Partridge Family or something. I think the Paul joins Hare Krishna cult idea had potential, recalling his desperate character traits from the first three seasons, but the mother Lakshimi character just seemed like a cheap way to throw in some more startling sex (not as startling as Roger's tryst with Megan's mother a few episodes back though!), and did anyone else notice the graphic post coital cleanup? Whoa, thanks Matthew, now I know you are a total perv. All in all, this season has had me eagerly awaiting each episode, and the arc of the season has been so much better than any other series as to be almost a joke. This is after all, smart and stylish TV, and I'd be happy to hear other's recommendations if there is something better than this out there, no matter the genre. God forbid there is another cop show.
