John_Strubel - The Sheffield effect

Hey Andrew: I'd be hard-pressed to believe that, the fact that Gary Sheffield is sitting on the bench lurking, is in any way responsible for the success of Daniel Murphy and/or Ryan Church. One, Church has always hit well early in the season. Two, Murphy is a hitter ahead of his time. I say that, not because of his batting average, but his at-bats. I have no access to pitches/at-bats but I have watched Murphy wear down pitchers with 10-11-12 pitch at-bats. That's how he hot the HR on Opening Day, etc. Finally, it would be a bit disrespectful to Murph and Church to suggest anything but their hard work is reason to believe in their success is real ... great blog! Keep it up! I read you daily.

Terence - Marlon Anderson cut

Technically, they haven't cut him. They've designated him for assigmnnet to the minors and since he has no more options left, he has to go on the waiver wire. If no team claims him, then he can either accept his assignment or get his outright release. I know, I know, the business of baseball can be confusing but basically you're right and it's almost a given that a team will claim him or at the least he probably won't accept assignment...

Perhaps he'll blow a game for them by cross-checking Reyes in an attempt to break up a double play. In which, he'll be called out for player interference thereby ending the end. Anderson's fate was sealed when the Mets acquired Sheffield. Plus, he was Willie's guy.
