Donna Brown - Community at its Best and Worst: From Boston to Goldthorpe

Thanks for visiting to comment, Stacey - I really do appreciate it. I have a real fondness for Barnsley - my husband's family still live there and we'd even talked about moving over. For me, that was one reason this really upset me. It's hard for a town like Barnsley to make the news and I know that the majority of people I spoke to felt this went too far. By contrast, your spirit and determination really is what is needed for people to start believing that Goldthorpe is worth the investment. I was accused by another commenter of being smug for having 'made it'. Well, I definitely haven't made it - three years ago we were eating spaghetti on toast almost every night, selling our wedding rings and anything else we could - but I didn't give up either. So, I'm proud rather than smug, for pushing forward and teaching myself new skills. You should be proud too - it sounds like you're making your future, rather than hoping someone makes it for you, and I know how much work that takes. Thanks again for taking the time to comment. I appreciate it and I know others will too!

When i was growing up my parents didnt want me to \'socialise\' much with the local children. Ive never been arrested and do not drink often either. I have found it hard growing up here because the oppotunities to become something are very slim. I didnt realise untill i was around 14-15 what people thought of where i come from until i had friends in doncaster and was told that goldthorpe was the arseholeof the planet. I was shocked but started to realise where they were coming from. when i was 19-20 i started working in a local shop and was distcustee to see people coming in at 8 in the morning for cider and microwave burgers! It baffled me and with just looking at the place u can see how\'scruffy\' it looks.. Just living in this area seems to give people the right to gudge the whole community but its unfair on people like me. My grandad worked at the pit in goldthorpe and was at the \'celebrations\' i also attended to see what was going to happen. I think the march was acceptable for how thatcher made people feel but it was taken too far with the effigy and was disrespectful to mrs thatchers family. Ive had it different living in goldthorpe and its been difficult it seems i always have to prove people wrong some people maybe a small amount of people from goldthorpe are good people. I am currently studying and working and not in the best job but with my enthusiasm and my focus to complete my course i will do well because i now know what i want. Its sad to see that some people of goldthorpe are quite happy living there and i know its not all bad. But the media and word of mouth seem to tar every one with the same brush. Some people have dreams they want to accomplish without being pulled down all the time. One reason to why the \'effigy\' was burned on main street is to show the world how run down the area is theres nothing for the younger generation to look forward to. They live in a run down area thats constantly slated and not helped. If the area was up to date and functional for newer generations then maybe goldthorpe wouldnt be so bad. If it was given a chance to recouperate and develop into something better. Sorry if ive bored you i just needed to say something about it.

The funeral was a highly politicised piece of conservative theatre. Goldthorpe had every right to respond as it did. I also dislike the 'I made it, so can you' air of smugness pervading the article.

I saw many comments yesterday that reflected a high level of anger/disgust about their actions. Unfortunately, Goldthorpe residents brought Barnsley and South Yorkshire into the news for all the wrong reasons.
