noah - Can Anarcho-Capitalism Work? - Llewellyn H. Rockwell Jr. - Mises Daily

Rothbard says the state sets an example of force and coercion for the people, which is true enough, but it is people who also set the example for the state. Absent the state, that example would still be set, by parents for children. Children learn coercion and violence first from parents, only later from the state. Getting rid of the state does not get rid of institutionalized coercion. The fact is, parenting by its very nature constitutes a subtle (or not) form of emotional violence, supposedly always for the child's "own good." Some say that the words “coerce” and “coercion” do not apply to the very young child when being disciplined or protected by parents, but to me it seems a matter of degree. The line can only be drawn arbitrarily, with cultural and individual bias, on what constitutes "violence" or "aggression." Rothbard says "the parental property right must be limited in time (and) in kind... a parent does not have the right to aggress against his children [yet virtually all parents do, by degree], but also the parent should not have a legal obligation to feed, clothe, or educate his children." He continues: "Regardless of his age, we must grant to every child the absolute right to runaway and to find new parents or to try to exist on his own... it is totally impermissible enslavement and an aggression upon his right of self-ownership for them to use force to compel him to return {and I must assume, to compel him to not run away in the first place]. The absolute right to run away is the child’s ultimate expression of his right of self-ownership, regardless of age." "Now if a parent may own his child then he may also transfer that ownership to someone else. He may give the child out for adoption, or he may sell the rights to the child [or, Rothbard fails to mention, he may simply abandon his property]. In short, we must face the fact that the purely free society will have a flourishing free market in children (to) allow for an allocation of children away from parents who dislike or do not care for their children." How do you inform a child that he is truly free and welcome to either leave or stay (let alone tell him he's for sale) without risking him feeling unwanted and unloved? One in a million could pull it off. Children, like most adults, mistake attachment for love. If the allocation of children away from parents who don't want or can't support their children meant those children were allocated to a place or in a way where they felt or received greater love, then all would be well, since children who are well-loved will largely be less coercive and violent as both children and adults. But of course, there is no way to know what a new owner intends to "do" with his new property, or how much he actually loves it, or how a child will react to being treated as property. So we can not really say with any certainty if the child market would make the world a better or worse place. The day parents cease coercing children and fully support their children's right of self-ownership (and support parental property rights over children) is the day we'll be ready for AC.

It's really not clear. Lower interest rates can lead to more borrowing but not necessarily more investment. As we know, higher interest rates (rate of return) generally lead to more savings and investments. Is it just me? Am I not reading the article correctly? Perhaps the article was too short and rather glib.

vasili - Central Banks are Not Innocent Bystanders - Peter St. Onge - Mises Daily

Outstanding. Mark Twain is usually quoted as saying that there are lies, Big lies AND THEN THERE ARE STATISTICS. The paper is an interesting piece or misguided macroeconomy as it examines aggregate investment across all sectors, and therefore cannot even begin to be sound economics of the misesian flavor. It does however propose an interesting albeit implied observation. In page 3, last paragraph, it reports that RAPID INVESTMENT GROWTH actually is followed by low profit growth for a total of 4 quarters. So if that is the case, and we ascribe the periods of rapid investment growth to lax monetary policy, it is surprising that the authors don't make the connection.

But 'Lew's' ignoratio elenchi goes way deeper than merely failing to address whether or not Ancap could work, it goes all the way into the very emotion based concepts of Anarchy and Capitalism, and it is used as a means to mute the cognitive dissonance generated within their defining terms and the realities of human nature and the real world. It's used as a form of mental compartmentalization.
