Church IS people...not programs, coffee bars, sound systems or memberships on the roster. I'm struggling with this issue, too (have been for several years and still can't wrap my brain around it). I think we are all so OFF in what God intended "church" to be. I wonder if God cares about the new coffee bar? Does he like mocha lattes or is he more of a straight, black coffee kind of Creator?

I'm somewhat of a pessimist so I dont see the mainstream churches giving up there million dollar buildings and nice cars, but on a grass roots level, the level of the new testament church, totally achievable. The original movement have few members and grew exponentially because it was real, genuine, and the love shown through. It is just as real and genuine today, we just need to quit putting on the show. Good thoughts friend.

Sitting there in the middle of it. So many thoughts....... I didn't grow up in a "cool" church. I went to church with some "backwards" people, but I never aspired to be like them. As I've gotten older and read challenges like this, I realize that the "backwards" people knew what it was about. I recognized early on that the Word of God runs in direct opposition to my world & culture. As I get older, I'm finding out just how much. Then I have to deal with my own pride. STINKS! (as I sit typing at Panera having just finished a $9 salad) Woe is me, for I am a (wo)man of unclean lips. So many lines of reasoning & justification..... I get lost in it. BTW, I still go to that church. It's gotten "cooler". Very few "backwards" people. Kinda sad.

Handing out socks and bottles of water; These things are great but is it really for us, or is it about us being able to go home to our comfortable living and tell ourselves that we really helped the needy? It seems that all 3 of these (arrogance, luxury and leisure and ignoring the needs of the poor) are all connected. Jesus made a habit of helping people, but if you read his interactions with them, he found out their needs, built a relationship, and met them in that place; rather than projecting needs onto them and then helping what he perceived their need to be. What would it look like if we took the time to build relationship before trying this thing we call 'outreach"? I imagine that the impact would be exponential in doing so rather than just handing out a pair of socks and telling them that Jesus loves them. (Philippians 2:3-4) Paul doesn't say to ignore our own desires, but he does say to lay ourselves aside and take care of others in our community and to show Jesus' love.

So many of us are guilty of this, particularly in America, as you said. I recently went on a rant of my own in front of my youth students about their sense of entitlement (after they helped themselves to things in our conference room set aside for outreaches). Aside from my frustrations with them in that moment, and the irritation of that as an issue with some of their parents as well, I realize it's much broader. And that this "sodomy", as you've defined it, is deeply rooted in me, and in our Body of believers. The cure seems so far away for our affluent churches. I can only begin in me.

If humility is simply an accurate view of ones self, then we surely are a prideful nation. I often feel as though our desire to have a "life of significance" is motivated by our desire for recognition and the accolades of our peers. Often when I hear people say "God has called me to do great things", I think back to Genesis and remember the reason we were created, simply to be with God. I have come to a place in my life where I do what I do (for work) not because its cool, or significant, but because I enjoy doing it, and am good at it. I think when we are judged, it wont be on how big and significant we were, it will be on how we loved and obeyed God, and how we treated others. I think your on to something here and would love to have a deeper discussion about it if your up for it, old man.
